027.12 "By far the noblest building in this Parish, or indeed in this part of the country, is Lennox Castle, the Seat of John Le Kincaid Lennox Esquire, who is proprietor of nearly half of the land in the Parish". New Statl. [Statistical] Account.
The Castle, which is a modern building of 20 years standing, is situated near the bottom of an elevated portion of the parish known as the "South Brae", but its position is nevertheless high and commanding from the Brae terminating abruptly and precipitately in a copse wood, which extends east & west of the Castle, on the north side, to a distance of nearly a mile on the one side - the west, & half a mile on the other. The building is composed of a number of Towers, the largest of which are upon the north-east and the south-east angles. Some of the interior Towers are much higher than the larger ones. None of them bear names. There is an arched gate-way on the west side entering a spacious courtyard, & the outer part of this side of the building is plain. The ruins of the old house of "Woodhead", which is the name the Estate still bears , stand at the top of the steep wooded bank which terminates the "South Brae". The ruins of a Dove Cot in the ornamental grounds, & a stone spiral cross near the Castle, on the south side, bear date 1713. There are extensive offices west of the Castle. Woodhead Estate & Lennox Castle are the property of Lady Strangford.
