Fullarton's Gazetteer There are three Parochial Schools in the Parish - one at Milton, one at Torrance, and the chief, or Parish School proper, in the Clachan of Campsie. The Ph. [Parish] Church is in Lennoxtown, besides which there is an U.P. Ch. [United Presbyterian Church] a R. [Roman] Catholic Chapel, to which there is also a School, and a body of Methodists worship in a room rented for the purpose. There are two Subscription Schools in Lennoxtown, and there is an endowed School - the Oswald School. There is an extensive Print Works in Lennoxtown and two on a smaller scale at Milton. The T.P. [Turn Pike] Road to Fintry & Kippen from Kilsyth passes through Lennoxtown, and there is a line of Road from this village to Strathblane, as well as other branch Roads to Glasgow. The principal antiquities are two Caledonian Forts. The Campsie Fells cross the northern part of the Parish. The Earls Seat is the highest in Campsie. A range of steep Fells stand above the village of Lennoxtown on the north side. The principal mansions are Lennox Castle Kincaid Ho. [House] Antermony Ho. [House], Ballencleroch or Kirkton Ho. [House] and Craigbarnet House. |
