the Glen. Many defaced remains of ditches are to be seen on the north & west sides, precisely as represented on Trace. The outer trench or ditch (which crosses the margin line of trace running southwards), seems to have been more for the purpose of carrying off water from the Fort, which from its position near the bottom of a range of steep hills may have been at times much liable to a great flow of water into it, than for the purposes of defence. The local name of "Maiden Castle" is not generally known to this Fort, but both Forts are commonly known to the people who call them Roman Forts.
