014.09 A well known name applying to an open spring well in the Rough Heathy Pasture above "Garradh Ban Wood". What this is derived from is not known, but there is a belief among the country people of its power of curing several diseases. It is not known however to possess any mineral qualities. A tree stood here formerly in which the people who drank used to put a nail or cut a mark upon. The stump of this tree still lies near the Well, shewing numerous examples of the custom by the number of nails in it.
There is some analogy between this & "Balmaha" which, upon the authorities quoted rules the spelling given.
