OS1/32/3/1 Baldernock Parish Baldernock Parish The name Baldernock is obviously of Celtic Origin and is supposed to be a corruption of Baldruinick, signifying Druid's-town, a supposition which some Druidical remains in the parish render highly probable. When the name Baldernock was given is uncertain, but the original boundaries were very small, till the year 1649, when the eastern half of the parish, disjoined from Campsie, was annexed quoad Sacra to Baldernock. The greatest length of the parish is about 4 miles & breadth 3 miles. It is bounded on the west by the parishes of New Kilpatrick & Strathblane; on the South by the rivers Allander & Kelvin, which, here running in different directions, the former east, the latter west, meet & blend on the lower part of the Southern border of the parish, separating it from Cadder. On the side fronting north & east, it is bounded by the parish of Campsie. Glasgow, the nearest market town is 7 or 8 miles [Continued on Page 2]

Its antiquity must be very considerable, even tradition does not venture to determine." Old Statistical Account. The "Castle" stands in Craigmaddie Plantation, near the mansion House of that Name from which there is, in the plantation, a much neglected foot path leading to it, having Stone steps here placed by Mr Glassford when living in the House previous to Mr Ds occupation just below the ruins to ascend the rock on which [continued on Page 6]

[Reverend] John Gillison F.C. [Free Church] Minister 027.15 "Tradition says that in this place called Craigmaddie Muir, a battle was fought with the Danes." Old Statl [Statistical] Account. There is nothing but tradition for the above Account of the Muir, which intelligent Authorities have read in works &c. of the Parish. The present extent to which the Name applies is small, but there is, upon the authorities quoted, no doubt that the Name formerly Comprehended the Plantation of Craigmaddie as well as "Blairskaith Muir" - the eastern & western bounds. On the north it is bounded by the Parishes of Campsie & Strathblane, & on the south by the arable ground adjoining. The Name is widely known particularly in Connexion with the Druidical Stones known as the "Auld Wife's Lift".

[Reverend] John Gillison J Mann, Parish Schoolmaster James McOrnie Craigmaddie Muir 027.15 "The most curious remains of antiquity in this Parish is a structure known as the "Auld Wife's Lift. It is situated near a mile north from the Church on very high ground, in a little flat of about 100 yards diameter, surrounded by an Ascent of a few yards in height, in the form of an Ampitheatre. It consists of three stones only, two of which of a prismatic shape, are laid along close by each other on the earth, and the third which was once probably a regular parallelopiped & still notwithstanding the depredations of time approaches that figure, is laid above the other two. The uppermost stone is 18 feet long, 11 broad & 6 deep, placed nearly horizontally with a small dip to the north. Its two supporters are about the same size. It can hardly be doubted that this is one of those rude structures erected by the Druids in their sacred groves." Old Statistical Account The description above is very correct & the name "Auld Wife's Lift" is generally known, as well as the supposition of its origin - Druidical.
OS1/32/3/8 [Page] 8 Co. [County] Stirling -- Baldernock Parish "These stones are said to resemble, in figure and position, other Druidical monuments, and their name to correspond with that of the "lifted stone" in Ireland mentioned by Cambden, and those in Poitiers in France called pierres levees" New Stat Act [Statistical Account] "It can hardly be matter of doubt that this is one of those rude structures erected by the Druids in their sacred groves. Its situation, in a very se- questered spot on an eminence surrounded by a grove of oaks, (the stumps of which trees were still visible in 1795), corresponds exactly with every description we have of these places of worship. The tra- dition is that three old women, having wagered which should carry the greatest weights, brought hither in their aprons the three stones of which the lift is constructed." (Ful. Gaz [Fullarton's Gazetteer])

In the district or in Parochial writings, this Name is spelt Blochearn & Blochern, but in Accounts &c. of the Parish it is given as adopted on Examination Traces, which from its likely derivation, is upon the first two personal authorities, the proper mode of spelling. The Proprietors of High & Low Blochairn are indifferent as to which form is used. Cotters Houses north of the steading are all comprehended under this Name - "High Blochairn".

[High] Blochairn Janet Lyon H. [High] Blochairn 027.15 "Not far from the old ruinous Tower of Craigmaddie to the westward, are several of those large loose heaps of Stone called Cairns, some of them oblong and others of a circular shape. One of the circular ones which has not been broken up is about 80 yards in circumference. From two that have been broken up, it appears that they are composed of loose stones carelessly thrown together, but at the bottom are large flags on edge in two parallel rows, at the distance of between three or four feet, lidded over with flags laid across; the Cavity thus formed is divided into partitions into cells of 6 or 7 feet long. In one of these long cairns lately broken up were found several fragments of a large coarsely fabricated Urn & some pieces of human bones." The farm in which these Cairns are is named Blochairn, which may be a corruption of Balcairn - "the town of the cairns." Old Statistical Acct. [Account]. "On the farm of Blochairn are Several oblong and Circular Cairns, Memorials of Ancient feuds &c". N. Statl. [New Statistical] Account.

Galloway Esqr. Mr. J. Donald H. [High]Blochairn Mr. J. Donald Mr. J. Donald A Galloway Esquire Messrs. Galloway & Donald James Scott Messrs. Galloway & Donald James Scott Messrs. Galloway & Donald James Scott 032.02 The Several Cairns upon the farms of Blochairn are adopted upon the authorities quoted in each case, in addition to the description & authority given above from the Old and New Statl. [Statistical] Accounts. The Urns etc. found were seen by the persons whose names are given, & who have pointed out the spots in which they saw them dug up at the time of discovery. At the large Cairn to the north-west at High Blochairn the Urn was found under a large slab stone, which at present may be seen standing at the gap of an adjoining dyke; and in the oblong Cairn, a little to the north-east of the stack yard of Low Blochairn, a Stone Cist was found, but there was nothing in it, according to what the person (J. Scott) who saw it states. The Three Urns & the Bronze Arrow head found in the road to the south-east, as pointed out by Mr. Galloway, who is or was in possession of them, were also found under a Slab. In one of the Cairns on Blochairn as many as 500 Cart loads of Stones have been taken away. It is supposed that the remains of the large Cairn to the north-west of H. [High] Blochairn, in which an Urn was got under a large slab, is the one alluded to, as its remains are still very large. All the Cairns have been represented on the Examination Traces as the remains appear at the present time (1862), and all have either a Conical or Oblong form exhibited in their construction - the former predominates. The Cairn south-west of High Blochairn is almost perfect, having never been broken open like the rest of those in the neighborhood. Immediately west of this, in an adjoining field, the remains of a regularly formed cairn are to be seen opened from the top & hollow within the circle, sloping gradually but distinctly outwards.
