Applies to the remains of a Romish Chapel situated on the southwest corner of "Inner Holm", about 1 mile N. [north] e. [east] of Skaw. Tradition says that it was erected by shipwrecked mariners as a fulfillment of a previous vow that if ever they got to land that they would build a chapel as a token of their deliverance from the wrath of the sea. There is no account of a burial ground being in connection with the chapel but a woman named "Barbra Anderson" while excavating inside the ruins of the chapel in search of money having previously dreamt of such being deposited there" came upon a stone cist or coffin enclosing the skeleton of a human body supposed to be that of a young man. The woman is still living in Whalsay & states it to have been found in A. [Anno] D. [Domini] 1858. |

A small knoll situated on a small point on the SE. [South East] side of the Loch of Sandwick, and N. [North] of Little Ness, said to be an ancient Burial Mound. It is principally covered over with verdure, but from one or two places where the surface is broken it would appear that it is composed chiefly of burnt stones broken very small. Its history is entirely lost, and beyond mere conjecture nothing is known concerning it. It has never been opened. |

A heap of stones situated on the west side of the Holm of Sandwick. It is said to be the remains of an ancient circular building. Natives of 50 years of age and upwards, resident in Sandwick and Clett can remember when a wall of great strength & thickness stood round the margin of the present cairn to a height of about 6 feet, of this wall, however, there is now no trace. No conjecture is offered as to the original nature, use or purpose of this object. It is not beleived to have been a Brough, and it is distinctly stated never to have been used as a "Skeo" at any period. It is said to be an antiquity, but beyond what is here stated no information is obtainable. |

"Braewick" is spelt "Breiwick" in its entry on page 106.
Suspect the spelling of Mr Lisk in the Authorities should be Leask.
From different ink used the version of the name " Little Lyri Geo" has been Re-submitted - this annotation being indicated in another name book.
Alteration to the names "Little Lerri Goe" & "The Kame" initialled "WF" [William Fraser] - unable to decipher the initials to the alteration to the name "Little Leiri Geo" (before its Re-submission). |
