This Island which is about 3 miles long by half that distance in breadth is situated half way between Orkney and Shetland although attached to the latter being in the parish of Dunrossness. The population of the Island is about 200 and the chief occupation of the Males is fishing, while the Females are one and all employed in Knitting - Fair Isle hosiery being much sought after not only on account of its varied colors but also from its well known warmth and comfort The women also do most of the Farm Work The Island although well cultivated at its southern extremity does not raise sufficient grain to keep the population alive and consequently supplies have to be sent from Orkney or Shetland The whole Island is the property of John Bruce Junior Esquire of Sumburgh who has now commenced to run |

run a Smack every fortnight weather permitting. The whole coast is wild and precipitous and there are only two points at which a landing can be effected.
The height of the Island makes it a sort of beacon in clear weather, but when [shrouded] in mist it becomes vey dangerous and proves fatal to many a gallant Bark. In the year [1588] one of the Ships composing the Spanish Armada was wrecked in a Creek called Swartz Goe and in 1868 during a thick fog a German emigrant vessel [went] full sail into one of the narrow Creeks which abound around [its] coast.
There is a School on the Island and a place of worship in connection with the [Established] Church as well as a small Methodist Chapel. The inhabitants as a rule are kind and obliging to Strangers but shrewd business men
[Additional notes read]
"The Lessing" She sailed into Geo Claver & jammed up the geo; the passengers were taken in boats through a natural arch to the beach at Haswalls and dragged up the slope there by ropes

The date 1588 confirmed from Wikipedia - the name of the vessel was El Gran Grifon.
The abbreviation "Int" in the online OED is given to the word "interjection" - "Intd" could be "Interjected".
The initials J.C.M appended to the notes probably belong to James Cosmo MacPherson, a Captain in the Royal engineers. |

On this point there appears to be the remains of an old fortification; a ditch seems to have been cut across the neck, and there are what appears to be the the remains of very ancient dwellings close to the ditch. " In the dark days of the 12 Century, when Earl paul held sway in Orkney & Zetland, his rival Earl Ronald, was bold enough to invade his dominions. His formidable fleet was seen from Fair Isle. Eric the signalman, hastened to kindle his warning beacon; but the faggots had been deluged with water by a treacherous assistant. No watchfire therefore illuminated the dark peaks of Fair Isle, and Earl Ronald was not again observed till he landed in Westry, Orkney."

It is situated 1 mile south of Boness and 1½ miles north east of the south Harbour. The Sheep Craig contains about 6 acres of good sheep pasture and is surrounded by a very bold and steep cliff, its highest part facing southwards towering in perpendicular height to very close on 600 feet. On the sea side of the Peninsula are several large arches called by the inhabitants Hillyars and thro' [through] the center one of which, a boat can be pulled giving to the visitor one of the grandest sights of a natural archway to be seen anywhere, and before which out ancient cathedrals dwindle into insignificance. The access to the top of the Craig is by means of a chain firmly fixed to the summit of the cliff, by means of which some of the more daring of the islanders ascend first and then assist in pulling up others. By the same means also are the sheep put on and taken off the Craig and so difficult is the undertaking considered that the proprietor John Bruce Junr [Junior] Esq. of Sumburgh allows each man who ascends a years grass for a sheep free. |

There are 8 or 9 Tumuli on the Island, varying somewhat in size, but all exactly similar in appearance, being green mounds, found to consist when opened of stones about of the size used for road metalling. The people of the island call them "Fairy Knowes" or "Gude Folks' Knowes", - & do not remove them even when they are in a cultivated field. Urns have been found in some of them made of steatite or clibber stone, They are no doubt sepulchral mounds of a very ancient date, although no bones have been found in them; the urns probably contained ashes. |

John Bruce Junr. [Junior] of Sumburgh, the proprietor of the Island, purchases all the fish, paying for it at a rate from 2/- to 3/6 per cwt. "wet", that is, as landed from the boats by the men. In a good season, a crew of 4 men & boys catches frequently 10 or 12 cwt. of fish a day, but the seasons vary much. The fish are then cured and dried on the beach, after which they are taken to Sumburgh in Shetland, & thence exported in cargoes to Scotland & Ireland principally the latter. The fish caught are principally saithe, with a few cod & ling. The latter are paid for at a higher rate than the former, - 5/- or 6/- a cwt. The cured fish, of which it of course takes a much greater number than the "wet" to make up weight, fetch £10 or £12 a ton for the saithe, and £18 to £20 for the cod & ling. The men do not receive the money for the fish until the latter have been disposed of in a cured state, which is generally about a year after they are caught. Meantime the fishermen receive goods from the shop which the proprietor keeps in the island, and there is an annual settlement of accounts between the proprietor & fishermen once a year. about July or August when the men are paid for the fish caught during the previous season. At the same time the rents of their small crofts are paid by the tenants. The crofts vary from 5 to 10 acres of arable land each, and the rents from £5 to £7 ; in addition to the arable land the tenants have the right of grazing in common over the greater part of the north half of the Island, and they keep there in summer a considerable number of cattle, sheep, and ponies. They all have cows one to four each, and an average each of about 30 head of sheep, from the wool of which their clothing is woven during the winter; but the crops on the arable land only provide enough meal for about half the year: the rest is imported & sold by the proprietor to the people. The latter as a rule are very fairly off for all the necessaries of life, but the houses are mostly bad and kept in indifferent order inside & outside. Some new stone & slated houses are now beginning to be built, and a road has been begun from the north to the south end of the island. Small pony-carts are also being introduced. The women do ⅔ of the croft work, and earn a good deal by knitting.
Every house has a large pile of timber near it, derived from wrecks, 2 or 3 of which generally occur every year, partly from storm, partly from the thick fogs which cover the island frequently during the summer months. The Board of Trade is understood to be contemplating the erection of a lighthouse & fog warning on the island, and the establishment of a life-boat station. Mr William Lawrence, who is the catechist & teacher in connexion with the Established Church on the Island, and who conducts a weekly service in the church in the absence of the Parish minister, has been instrumental in recently drawing attention to the danger to navigation caused by the Island's position & its stormy climate; he has also succeeded in obtaining for it last year a fortnightly mail. The School has been hitherto [supported] by the society for propogating Christian Knowledge but is about to be transferred [to the] School Board of Dunrossness
The sole proprietor of the Island is John Bruce Junr. [Junior] Esq. of Sumburgh, Dunrossness, Shetland, acting for his father John [Bruce] Esq. of Sand Lodge, Shetland.
