Site of Cross Kirk and Burial Ground Sir R. Sibbald's "Description of the Isles of Orkney & Zetland" 1711. Brand's Description of Orkney, Zetland etc. 1703 067.01 No remains of this old church on the ground, the site and that of the burial ground being indicated by a high green mound only.
"In the midst of the sand at the head of Quendale Bay stands the South Kirk of Dunrossness, called the Cross Kirk, pretty large and well-replenished. To the South wall of this church are affixed 2 monuments one very large and very curiously cut at the expense of Hector Bruce of Snowaness, another not so large or so fine belonging to Laurence Sinclair of Quendale; there are other 2 in the church standing on pillars one pertaining to Robert Bruce of Sumburgh another to Quendale" Sir R. Sibbald 1711.
"In the Parish of Dunrossness are 3 churches, Cross-Kirk, Sandwick & Fair Isle". Brand, 1703.
Two of the monuments mentioned above by Sibbald seem still to be on the ground; one still erect, being probably the very curiously cut" one just mentioned, the other stone has fallen & now lies on the surface of the ground. Both stones seem to have XVII th Century dates but the inscriptions are hardly legible. The burial ground appears to have been in use until not very long ago.
