Shetland -- Parish of Delting

Trondavoe [Note] Thróndr, or Thrāndr, a man's name
Vogr, a bay
This is a peculiar instance of transposition of names: the Voe called Voxter Voe was no doubt originally Tronda Voe: & from the voe the farm near it took the name Vogs-setr or Voxter (the pastures or farm of the bay or voe). The Voe is now called by the name of the farm Voxter: while the farm Trondavoe takes the original name of the Voe -

Hardwell [Note] Harðr, hard & either hvalli, a hill, or Vellir, fields; probably the latter, in which case Hardwell would be more correct -
(-Wall, -well, -will, common terminations in Shetland. of which it is difficult to say whether they are from hvalli or hóll, hill, or Vellir fields, the latter is the original of the Norman french - Villiers, & of many English terminations -Well.)
