A parish in Selkirkshire, and at one time the largest in the lowlands of Scotland and comprehending considerably more than one third of the whole county - It consisted of the present parish of "Yarrow" as well as that known as "Kirkhope" parish, which was separated from Yarrow in the year 1851 - a summons of disjunction & erection having been served on the heritors at the instance of his Grace the Duke of Buccleuch, praying that certain parts of Yarrow might be formed into a separate parish to be called "Kirkhope" - this was agreed to by the Commissioners of Woods & Forests, the Deans of the Chapel Royal, and the Heritors; and Yarrow which contained 62.666 acres was reduced to 39.693. minus 22.973 the content of the new parish. |

The present parish is bounded on the west by the parishes of Lyne and Manor in Peebles Co. [County] - N.W. [North West] by part of Peebles parish in Selkirkshire. On the N. [North] by the parish of Traquair in Peeblesshire and on the N & N. E [North & North East] by the Selkirkshire portions of Stow & Innerleithen parishes, on the East by Selkirk; on the S.E. by Kirkhope; and on the S.E, S & S.W [South-East, South, South-West] by Ettrick - Its outline, especially on the North, is singularly irregular, and includes several long and intricate projections which are nearly insulated by conterminous parishes - The district comprehends several miles of the South of the Vale of the Tweed, about four-fifths of the Yarrow, |

The hill chains run nearly parallel to each other, and extend from West South West to East North East - Excepting over some space on the South they are generally elongated in their outline, and rounded on their summits; and they rarely exceed 2,000, or come short of 1000 feet of altitude, above sea level - The vales are generally narrow and confined, yet do not want occasional picturesqueness; and when they have a protuberating hill or an elbow, on the one side, they usually exhibit a corresponding recess on the other.
Various appearances along the course of the principal streams indicate that the Vales were formerly chains of lakes, or that the rivers flowed at a higher level |

than now, and formed themselves into lacustrine expansions - so decidedly is the district upland, and so closely do its heights press one anothers bases, that the proportion of pasture compared to that of arable ground is as 24 to 1.
The arable soil, though various in quality & composition, is generally a light formation from greywacke and clay slate rocks, abounding in large stones, and is not well adapted to culture - The rearing of Sheep is the chief branch of husbandry - |

This place is now in ruins, it is the remains of the ancestral stronghold of the now noble family of Murray. It is supposed to have been in it's prime about the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century, about the latter time, according to tradition, it was inhabited by Sir Gideon Murray, ancestor of the present Lord Elibank, who had a family of marriageable but illfavored daughters. And Sir Gideon having got Young Willie Scott the Laird of Harden into his power, forced him to purchase his life by marrying one of them. There is a piece of ground lying to the west of Yarrow Kirk, which appears to have been the scene of slaughter and sepulchre. From time immemorial it was a low waste moor till twenty five years ago, when formed into a number of cultivated enclosures. On more than twenty different spots were large cairns, in many of which fine yellow dust, and in one an old spear, was found. Two unhewn massive stones still stand about 100 yards distant from each other, and which doubtless are the monuments of the dead. The real tradition simply bears, that here a deadly feud was settled by dint of arms; the upright stones mark the place where the two lords or leaders fell, and the bodies of their followers were thrown into a marshy pool called the Dead Lake, in the adjoining haugh. |

"In ploughing Annan's Treat, a huge monumental Stone, with an inscription, was discovered; but being rather scratched than engraved, and the lines being run through each other, it is only possible to read one or two Latin words. It probably records the event of the combat fought betwixt John Scott of Tushielaw, and his brother-in-law Walter Scott, third son of Robert of Thirlestane, in which the latter was slain. The person slain was the male ancestor of the present Lord Napier.
Tradition affirms that the hero of the song (Dowie Dens of Yarrow) was murdered by the brother either of his wife or bethroted bride. The alleged cause of malice was the lady's father having proposed to endow her with half of his property, upon her marriage with a warrior of such renown.
The name of the murderer is said to have been Annan and the place of combat is stile called Annan's Treat.
It is a low muir, on the banks of the Yarrow, lying to the west of Yarrow Kirk. Two tall unhewn masses of stone are erected about eighty yards(?) distant from each other, and the least child that can herd a cow, will tell the passenger, that there lie "the two lords, who were slain in single combat."

In fact she is much patronised by the nobility & gentry in the fishing

A popular, poetic & historical name for the whole or chief part of Selkirkshire.
All the country watered by the Ettrick, the Yarrow, and their tributaries, and the Kindred districts watered by the Cadon northward of the Tweed, besides the upper ward of Clydesdale, was anciently a literal Forest, the remains of the ancient Caledonian Forest - the most numerous woods were oaks. mingled with birch & hazel - Excepting a few straggling thorns and some solitary birches, now traces of the Forest now remain altho [although], wherever protected from the sheep, copses soon arise without any Planting.
A Burnaby
