It rises in several head waters in the southern extremity of the parishes of Cavers & Hawick in the range of hills which separate Dumfries from Roxburgh. In the language of the Celt it means that which expands or spreads in its course, or has a tendency to overflow its banks, and which exactly describes the character of the River - its general course or direction is N.[North] East and passes through the most beautiful scenery in Scotland - It enters the Tweed opposite the town of Kelso. |
