Another Conjecture Concerning the origin of the name is, that it signifies the Village on the Moor. It is found sometimes written Muirbattle and Moonbattle. But this spelling never occurs in any of the earlier writings. Nor is such a derivation peculiarly applicable wither to the present or former locality, at least not more so, than to the majority perhaps of the Villages of Scotland. Besides, it is liable, to the objection of making the name partly Scottish & partly Saxon.
