OS1/29/29/1 MINTO [parish] Minto Walker's Map of Scotland. Johnstone's Map of Roxburghshire. Blackwood's Map of Roxburghshire. 014; 019; 020; 021 [Situation] In the centre of the County of Roxburgh. The name is stated to be derived from British, Celtic and Saxon. That perhaps most generally ascribed is from British Mintaw, the brink or edge which extends out - referring either to the situation of the original village of Minto or to the position of the mansion-house where an angular point is formed by the junction of two streams. The orthography appearing in old Charters is Myntow Mintov and Mynthow. The Parish of Minto is bounded on the North by those of Lilliesleaf and Ancrum on the East by Cavers, on the South by Cavers and Wilton and on the West by Wilton. No part of it is detached nor is there within its limits a detached portion of another Parish. Its form is nearly an oblong - contracting at the west and tapering to a near point at the East. From the Nn [Northern] to its Southern [continued on page 2]
OS1/29/29/1 [Page] 1 Parish of Minto -- County of Roxburgh.
OS1/29/29/2 [continued from page 1] Southern point it measures about 3 1/2 miles and from West to East upwards of 4 miles and has an area of about 5,621 Impl. [Imperial] Acres of which about 3,400 are arable, 1,430 pasture and about 800 wood. A stripe of haugh land at the South forms the only level ground - the surface in other situations rising in frequent undulations. The general appearance of the district is chiefly diversified by two green hills the highest of which attains an elevation of about 880 feet and Minto Craigs a bold eminence of trap rock measuring about 720 feet. The Southern district is diversified by small glens watered by rivulets. The principal stream is the River Teviot on the En. [Eastern] boundary into which Craigend, Cockerscar, Dearly, Grinding, Huntlaw, Hassendean, Heill, Lurden & Newlands Burns fall. The Hawick Branch of North British Railway nearly bisects the Parish from North - South - South - West. There is no manufactory carried on, no minerals are wrought, material for building purposes is abundant. The only village is Minto, situated midway on the swell toward the base of the hills, which consists of a singularly pleasant little cluster of neat cottages traced with flowering shrubs - the population of which may be about 130. Grouped with the village is the Parish School a large and neat building - and a short distance west of it is the Parish Church a handsome gothic building capable of accommodating 350. Patron Earl of Minto who is also chief proprietor. Population of the Parish at the last census 467. This Parish formerly contained several Towers or border Peels which for the most part have now disappeared. One called Fatlips Castle figures in Grose's views in Scotland. It is supposed to have been a stronghold belonging to Turnbull of Barnhills whose place of outlook is on a projecting rock immediately underneath. Monks Tower - the site of which has been shewn - was originally a cell belonging to the Monks of Melrose which probably was erected about 1192 when Jocelyn Bishop of Glasgow presented to the Abbey the church lands and tithes of Hassendean. The Site of Hassendean Chapel which is now overflowed by the Water of the Teviot has been shewn. Novr. [November] 31 58
