According to Chalmers in his "Caledonia" the original name of this parish signifies the town of Machar or Michar, who is supposed to have possessed that portion of Country which forms the parish of Makerston.
It is bounded on the west by the parish of Merton; on the North by the parish of Smailholm; on the east by that of Kelso; and on the South by the Tweed and the parishes of Maxton & Roxburgh.
It extends in length from East to West between 3 & 4 miles, & in breadth, from North to South between 2 & 3.
The Church and Manse were built on a new site in 1807, near the centre of the parish.
An excambion of the Glebe took place at the same time (1807) the extent is 22 acres, and the value may be about £1.5.0. per acre |

The popular, & the really remotest source of the Tweed is a paltry fountain called Tweed's-well, a little above the farm house of Tweedshaws, and at the foot of a hill named Tweeds Cross, on the S. [South] Western boundary of the Parish of Peebles-shire.
From its remotest Source to the Sea, at Berwick-upon-Tweed, it performs irrespectively of windings, a run of about 100 miles, and drains 1870 Square miles |

The bed of the River is very irregular with deep fishing Pools, each pool or Stream having a Separate name
The name "Trows" is a Corruption of Troughs, The mode adopted by fishermen many years ago when they had no Boat was to get two Troughs and attach them to the ends of a Pole - they then got within the Troughs, floated down the stream having in their hands a lighted torch, & in this manner Speared Salmon |
