OS1/29/22/1 KELSO [parish] Kelso (Parish) Map of Scotland Map of Roxburghshire Map of Berwickshire New Statistical account Fullerton's Gazetteer 005.16; 006.13; 09.03; 09.04; 09.07; 09.08; 09.12; 010.01 The name of the town of Kelso gave a corresponding one to the parish - Kelso, formerly written "Kellsowe", and at still more recent periods, Calchow, and Calkow, is supposed to owe its name to the cliff on which part of the town Stands - The name Calkow is composed of two words, - the Celtic Calch or Cealc, Chalk, and the anglo-Saxon ho or how, a height: and as the cliff referred to contains gypsum, and other calcareous earths, the appellation Calkhow (Scottish Cauk-heugh) is far from inappropriate - In Shape, the parish is nearly triangular; its greatest length is about 5 miles, its greatest breadth about 4 - It is divided into two nearly equal parts by the River Tweed; which intersects it in a N. [North] easterly direction, for about 3 miles - [Continued on page 2]

OS1/29/22/2 KELSO [Parish] Kelso (Parish) Continued [from page 1] and as the parish stretches longitudinally in a direction at right angles to the river, so as to form a transverse section of the vale of the Tweed, its topographical features necessarily embrace both dale and upland, and exhibit the varied character inseparable from the scenery of a wide & beautifully-diversified Valley - In the Northern division, the Country gradually rises from the rivers edge, in a series of undulating ridges nearly parallel to each other and to the river; while, in the Southern, the general slope of the ground, which also gradually rises as it recedes from the Tweed, - is modified both by the precipitous character of the river-banks, and by the Valley on the West, through which the Teviot pours its tributary waters into the Tweed - Viewed from the distant heights [Continued on page 3]

OS1/29/22/3 KELSO [parish] Kelso (Parish) Continued [from page 2] of Stichill and Hume, Kelso appears to occupy a level surface, at the bottom of a wide richly Wooded Strath-; but when seen in-birds-eye view from the vicinity of the River, it presents the appearance of an amphitheatre, varied as well in its physical outlines as in its artificial adornments, - intersected by two broad and noble rivers, and having for its boundary a circle of wooded heights - Prior to the Reformation, the territory now included in the parish of Kelso, appears to have comprehended three parishes; the parish of Kelso on the North-bank of the Tweed, the parishes of Maxwell and St. James's, both on the South, & separated from each other by the River Teviot - Two at least of those parishes, Kelso and Maxwell, seem [Continued on page 4]

Ridpath's Border History. 009.04 After the English had held possession of the Castle of Roxburgh for more than a century, and the frequent attempts of the Scots to recover their fortress had been in vain, James II King of Scotland laid siege to it in 1460, well furnished with Artillery and other warlike machinery. He conducted the Earl of Huntley, who had arrived with troops to his assistance as a mark of friendship to the trenches, to see a discharge of his Artillery of which he was exceeding proud. One piece called "the lion" was remarkable for its enormous size, it was made of brass and cast in Flandres by order of King James I with the following inscription upon it: "Illustri Jacobi Scottorum, principe digno, Regi magnifico, dum fulmine castra reduco Factus sum sub eo, nuncuper ergo Leo" The King stood so near to one of them which burst in discharging, that a splinter of it struck him almost instantly dead. The Holly tree which stands about half way between Floors Castle and the Tweed, and is surrounded by a paling to protect it from injury, has been planted on the spot where this melancholy [Continued on page 26]

Her Example and Exortations had a great effect in exiting the besieges to exert their utmost Efforts. The Garrison of the Castle soon found themselves reduced to Extremities, surrendered the fortress on obtaining leave to retire with their person and goods in safety, The victors reduced the Castle to a heap of Ruins, that it might cease to be centre of future strife between the nations.

The townhead lieges [continued on page 38]
