A burgh-of-barony, the largest town in the eastern border Counties of Scotland, and, both in itself, and in its environs, one of the most beautiful of its size in Europe, stands in 55º. 36' north latitude, and 1º. 20' west longitude from Greenwich; 42 miles south by east of Edinburgh - 23 miles West from Berwick-upon Tweed; 10 miles N.E [North East] from Jedburgh; 9 miles S.W. [South West] from Coldstream; & 4 1/2 miles West from the boundary line with England. It is delightfully situated at the confluence of the Tweed and the Teviot - on the left bank of the former; and stretches along a plain in the centre of the gently rising & magnificent amphitheatre formed by the basin configuration of its parish, commanding from every opening of its streets, birds-eye views of exquisite lovely scenery & constituting in the tracery of its own Burghal landscape, an object of high interest in the midst of its beautiful environs. The sumptuous architectural character

of its venerable Abbey, - the air of pretension worn by its public buildings, - the light colored stone, and the blue slate roofs of its dwelling houses, - the graceful sweep, and the tidy cleanliness with which it winds along the rivers, - and the airiness and generally pleasing aspect of its streets - all impress upon it, as seen from without or from within, a city like character - "Patten" so far back as the reign of Edwd. [Edward] VI described it as "a pretty Market Town" - an eulogism of no mean measure in an age when most British towns were characterizeable only by their various degrees of meanness, lumpishness, & filth. The town consists of a central square or market-place, and divergent Streets and alleys. The square is spacious and airy, very large to exist in a

provincial town, presided overall by the Town Hall - on the East side - and edificed with neat modern houses of three Stories high, some of which have on the ground floor good and even elegant shops. From the square, issue four thoroughfares, - Roxburgh Street, Bridge St. Mill Wynd, and the Horse & Wood Markets. Roxburgh Street goes off from the N. [North] West end of the square and runs sinuously parallel with the river, sending down its back tenements on one side to the edge of the River - though irregular, and not anywhere elegant in its buildings, it has a pleasant appearance, and bears the palm of both healthiness and general favour. At present it is upwards of 1/4 of a mile in length; but formerly it reached to what is now the middle of the Duke of Roxburghe's Garden, having been curtailed and demolished

[South] West Corner of the Square; and tho' inferior to Roxburgh Street in length, is superior in general appearance, and contains many elegant houses - this street sends off Ovan Wynd and Havanna Close the latter leading to Ednam House - and the Abbey Close, anciently the thoroughfare to the old Bridge. Mill Wynd leaves the west side of the Square at a right-angle with Bridge St. and leads to the Corn mill. The streets called The Horse & Wood Markets go off from the East Side of the Square and lead towards Coldstream & Dunse.

The design was furnished by the late Mr. Rennie, and was afterwards adopted by that distinguished Artist as the design for Waterloo Bridge in London. The "Dispensary" occupies a healthy and airy site near the Tweed, it was founded in 1789, enlarged and provided with Baths in 1818. There are two Free churches in the town two United Presbyterian Churches, one Reformed Presbyterian Church - one Quakers Meeting House and one Roman Catholic Chapel. The Episcopalian church, though small, is a tasteful Gothic building snugly ensconced on the skirt of the pleasure grounds of Ednam House overlooking the Tweed. It will contain about 218 persons, has two Small galleries, beautifully Stained glass windows and possesses an Excellent organ, the only one in the Town. The grand architectural attractions of Kelso, and one which would be strongly felt & highly prized in any city is the ruinous abbey. For a description of which see page 87 to 90

A new Corn exchange was erected about 2 years ago; it is a large plain building fitted up with stalls around the walls, each stall being numbered, & having the name of the occupier painted on a small bord immediately above. It is now used by the farmers & merchants for the transaction of business, as business of this sort was formerly carried on in the open Square. It has a small Galary at the North end intended for an Orchestra and the building is now very generally used for Concerts, Popular & scientific Lectures etc.

the Kelso chronicle which originated in 1832, are published, the former twice a week, the latter once. Kelso has the honor of being the Birth-place of the Ballantyne press, and the first of Sir Walter Scotts works were printed here. There are extensive Gas Works, from which the town is pretty well lighted, it is also well supplied with water but the drainage of the town is very imperfect. Kelso is the Market-town of the district - has a weekly corn market, and a monthly cattle & Sheep market - in some parts of the year the cattle market is held fortnightly. |

An Ancient cross stood here in the garden that was made in the last century by a duke of Roxburgh. The Houses at the Townhead were pulled down and the road diverted to give space for the garden. The cross stood in the middle or side of the street. The weekly markets used to be held at this end of the Town, the original Kelso. The cross was shifted from the garden into the middle of the street, put opposite the little lane leading down to Lady Bennet's well, and about 45 years ago (1812) it was broken to pieces by Mr Lambs father and built into the corner house on the left hand going down to the Dukes old garden above mentioned.

The house on the west side of the passage was built some few years ago by one Mr. Gray a mason, and over the doorway he built in a large stone on which is cut a coat of arms surrounded by a pious motto and the date 16--. This stone was obtained from an old building near the square. Judging by the style of the mouldings it is from an old ruin in Elliott's close or court off the horse market, but no historical information has been obtained about the ruin. |

A piece of ground on which an annual fair is held called "St. James's Fair". It is the site of the old town of Roxburgh, and is several feet lower than the large flat piece of ground adjoining it - called Vigorous Haugh, and on which the Protector Somerset encamped in 1547. Nothing of old Roxburgh now remains every vestige of antiquity has been demolished. Some curious Monumental remains have been dug up from the Burial ground, of St. James Church. In ancient times when Kelso was a place of little importance and consisted of a few cottages at the town head a stone bridge crossed the Tweed at old Roxburgh, a Ford also existed, and, until more recently, a Ferry. The Coble Hole or the Boat Hole was the landing place on the Kelso side. |

The oldest charitable Institution in the Town of Kelso, having been established in 1777, for the benefit of the sick poor of the town & district, principally through the philanthropic exertions of the late Hon. [Honourable] Mrs Baillie of Mellerstain & the late Dr. [Doctor] C. Douglas of Kelso.
This institution is Supported by Voluntary Contributions: its accumulated capital, however, being now so considerable as to make it independent of any very large amount of annual Subscriptions.
Patients are, under certain limitations, visited at their own houses, by the surgeons of the institution; and, in the institution-house, there are both wards for fever patients, and rooms for the performance of Surgical operations; to which have recently been added water & vapour baths, accessible, at a specified charge, to the Public generally. |

Some of the Houses and shops are of a superior character and others duly middling. The whole Street now bears the name of Roxburgh Street - but Roxburgh St. and Bowmont St. are modern names, as these Streets were known by different names in their respective localities - such as Cunzie Nook, Windy Gowl, Town Head etc. the latter being obsolete. The town's authorities did away with all these lesser names and adopted the two general names of Roxburgh St. and Bowmont St. |

originally a precipitous Heugh in which chalk and some kinds of Gypsum(?) are to be found. It was of Historical & Geological interest but being undermined by the action of the River it was cut into terraces some years ago. The name of the Town is derived from Chalk Heugh and it is spelt more than 20 different ways in old records, but all evidently the same name. Chalk is often pronounced as though written Kauk. The rocky Heugh has preserved a long tail of high shingle from the action of the Tweed and Teviot whose combined waters have cut a deep channel in parts and so protected. |

A large horse shoe let into a stone in Roxburgh Street, in the middle of the Roadway and not far from Cuinzie Neuk. The Shoe is mentioned in Property deeds. According to tradition it marks the spot where King James the second's horse lost one of it's shoes in 1460 when the King was on his way to attack Roxburgh Castle. He is said to have been killed by the bursting of a cannon, and the present duke of Roxburgh has planted a holly tree to mark the spot.
The story of the shoe may possibly be true, but a Kings horse is generally well shod. "The horse shoe 1460" may be written in German text. |

A Modern building on the east side of the Square, and erected in 1816. The ordinary public business of the Town is transacted here. An arcade for a poultry Butter and egg Market Underneath the Hall, but disused in consequence of the now common practice of disposing of the above articles at the shops in the Town, instead of wasting the best parts of a day for buyers, a practice identical with the ridiculed theory of the French and other Socialists but less comprehensive. |

A large good house off the west side of Roxburgh Street and in the neighbourhood of Chalk Heugh. Hilton and Mye are the names of two properties in the County of Stirling and belong or belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Craig respectively, and Hiltonmye is a fanciful combination of the two names. Perhaps they had better have a hyphen between them, thus Hilton- mye. Hilton is an intelligable name by itself, but Mye is supposed to be a Celtic word pure or corrupt, Magh - a field, is the nearest approach to it but no satisfactory information has been obtained. |

An ancient ford, now abolished and disused (as a public ford) by an Act of parliament, being within One mile of Kelso New bridge erected in 1800-3. The ford crosses the Tweed at the end of Bullet Loan and was a short cut to or from the Berwick road, in preference to going round by Maxwell Heugh. It led across Wooden Anna on the other side of the Tweed and emerged near Wooden Mills. The name Hempseed Ford might be supposed to be a slight corruption from Holm Side Ford crossing over to the side of the Holme, but on further enquiry it appears that Hemp seed was grown in the neighbourhood some years ago, and the names drying house Lane bleach field etc. seem to confirm the correctness of the present orthography. *
*On a plan of Kelso, 1852, Hempseed ford is written to the river from the Weir at Susy's lane to Bullet Loan, as though the name applied to a lengthwise portion of the river, and some parties state that this is the correct application of the name. Hempseed Cottage appears to have received its name under this idea. The river between the two lanes is fordable at any part, but the name is written on the Trace as though the ford was a continuation of the road, across the river. |

On the east side of the Town, and Consists of a large grass field surrounded by a gravel Walk and a row of young Trees between the Walk and boundary hedge. A central portion is carefully levelled and rolled for cricketing, and rustic sports of all Kinds are celebrated in the park annually. During the Summer Months it answers the purpose of a village green. In a few years its appearance will be improved by the growth of the young trees. It makes an excellent parade ground for the Militia or other troops sometimes stationed in Kelso. The park is part of some fields formerly called the short whings or whangs, in which the shoemakers' Society of the Town had some proprietorship or interest. The Long whings (or whangs) are some long fields on the east side of the park; one of them is now being converted into a nursery. Whangs need not be written on the plan. |

A lane leading from the east Corner of Shedden Park to Hempseed ford across the river Tweed. Lodge Loan is written to this Lane on the plan of Kelso 1823, but this was an error. It was also an error on the same plan to write Bullet Loan to the Main Road to coldstream. One might suppose the Name to be a slight corruption of Bullock Loan, but it has long been written Bullet Loan, and may possibly have originated in the time of Hertfords attack on the abbey, as his guns would be placed in the neighbourhood. It is an excavated lane |

A little beyond Teviot Bridge is a place called The "Friars". The Grey Friars had a convent here previous to 1235. Their Church was dedicated to St. Peter. A burying ground for the brethren of the order was dedicated in May, 1235, by William, Bishop of Glasgow - within the last two years, the Site of the Convent was occupied by a farm house & outbuildings which were called Friars, several years ago the occupant of the Farm Came upon the burying ground of the order. A few of the Coffins were in a good state of preservation, and ornamented with rude plates of Iron. At the entrance of their Chapel - (St. Peter, a Skeleton was found, and near to it a large Key. The workmen in the Course of their operations, laid open Several Vaults & Subterranean passages built with freestone, in one of which they found a Malt-steep, & beside it a bottle & glass with the name of John Hayman upon it, both clumsily made. |

All that exists now are the remains of the Church. Founded in 1128, & is considered a good specimen of Norman Architecture. The great thickness of the walls enabled it to withstand the frequent burnings to which it was subjected, by the English, but in the year 1545 it was battered down with Cannon and reduced to its present state, by the celebrated Earl of Hertford.

The following account, taken from "Mortons - Monastic Annals of Teviotdale", will be found interesting.
"This ancient sacred eidfice has been frequently referred to by Antiquarians as one of the oldest specimens of Ecclesiastical architecture to be found in Scotland.
Kelso Abbey was one of the munificient foundations of David the First; but no vestige is now left of any part but the Ruins of the Church, and of it the choir is nearly gone; but the walls of the transeps, centre tower, and west end remain. On referring to the Plan, it will be observed, that, like some others of the old Saxon and early Norman Churches, there is no nave, unless the Compartment at the western entrance, which is merely a Porch of twenty-three feet Square, may be called a nave. The choir has had when entire, three divisions, a Centre and Side aisles; but the two piers shaded black, with the arches & Superstructure (over)

are all that remain of this part of the church. These arches spring from massive Saxon piers, having slender circular pillars attached, with bold projecting capitals, forming imposts for the springing of the arches. The walls are thick and firmly built, and, like most other ancient churches, have narrow passages within their thickness. The exterior character of this church is very imposing, and it is, undoubtedly, the finest remains in Scotland of Saxon architecture. The deep splayed circular arch, and its characteristic enrichments, and zigzag mouldings, the nail-head, the chevron, & the diagonal ornaments, and many more well known Saxon mouldings, are to be found in the N. [North] & West fronts. There is evidently part of the superstructure of this church of the Norman Style: The blank ranges of intersecting arches, placed round the walls, both within & without, the double arcade, of

Small Circular arches supported by slender shafts, that had when entire, run round the walls of the choir, over the massive Saxon arches: these belong to the Norman Style. There are likewise some fragments of early English in the centre tower. Kelso Abbey exhibits as perfect an example of interlacing arches as is to be found in the Kingdom; thus, it is believed by many learned authors, that the Gothic, or pointed Style, took its rise from the intermediate form of interlacing Arches. They were first used by the Norman architects, as mere ornaments, carried round to relieve the dead walls of their Churches; and, soon after, the Circular headed windows were abandoned, and long narrow pointed windows were substituted, which gradually merged into what is called the early English Gothic." A large Island, south-east of Kelso. The soil is deep earth and Sand over gravel & Shingle, but is allowed to remain in a rough state for Cattle. A deep cut or stream which supplies Wooden Mill, separates the Island from the main land. A shallow stream, sometimes quite dry in Summer flows Northward from Crown Point, and enters the Tweed a little lower down, forming a lesser Island, Considerably lower than the larger one, the side next the river being quite denuded of Soil. The whole Ana is sometimes Covered with water - after severe and heavy rains. |

The popular, and the really remotest source of the Tweed is a paltry fountain Called "Tweed's-well", a little above the farm house of "Tweedshaws", & at the foot of a hill named "Tweeds Cross", about 1500 feet above the level of the Sea. The Tweed, directly, or indirectly, drains nearly the whole of the Central and Eastern border Counties of Scotland and the Northern portion of Northumberland to the extent of 1870 Square Miles. From its remotest source, to the Sea at Berwick upon Tweed it, performs, irrespectively of its windings, a run of about 100 miles. |
