009.04 | originally a precipitous Heugh in which chalk and some kinds of Gypsum(?) are to be found. It was of Historical & Geological interest but being undermined by the action of the River it was cut into terraces some years ago. The name of the Town is derived from Chalk Heugh and it is spelt more than 20 different ways in old records, but all evidently the same name. Chalk is often pronounced as though written Kauk. The rocky Heugh has preserved a long tail of high shingle from the action of the Tweed and Teviot whose combined waters have cut a deep channel in parts and so protected. |
