009.04 This is a very old well, within the Duke of Roxburghe's Demesne, and before Teviot Bridge was erected a Ferry existed close to the well between St. James' Green, and what was then termed the Town Head. The ferryman (who resided in the house now occupied by Mr. Deppie - who rents the Dukes Garden) was called "Tom Lillie" and from whom the well got its name - he was the last of the ferrymen at this place as the erection of Teviot Bridge caused the ferry to be discontinued.
