GALASHIELS [Town] Galashiels (Town) Map of Scotland
Map of Selkirkshire
Map of Roxburghshire
003.14; 003.15; 007.03 The town of Galashiels stands on the Gala Water, 5 miles N.W. [North West] of Melrose; 6 N.E [North East] of Selkirk; 18 East of Peebles; and 28. S. [South] East of Edinburgh.
The original Village occupied a site on the acclivity south of the Gala, but the still partially standing, and even slightly renovated with new buildings, it has, for a considerable period, been sinking gradually into decay - the present town originated about 65 years ago.
Though Galashiels as a whole is joined together in position and interests, it consists of 3 legally distinct portions.
The 1st is the town of Galashiels Proper, situated in Selkirkshire, the tenure of which is leasehold, in leases of 99 years.
