New Statistical Account

The County Map |
015; 021 |
The parish of Crailing consists of the old parish, and of Nisbet: the former on the South, and the latter on the North of the Teviot.
The origin of the name of Crailing Cannot be easily traced. Both Lower, and Upper Crailing stand on Oxnam Water, which runs rapidly over a freestone rock, with banks steep, and craggy: thus Crai-lyn, in the Cambro-British speech signifies the Brisk-pool. And, this name may have been given, by the British settlers, on the Oxnam, from the usual ebullitions of this mountain stream: Craig-lyn, in the same language, signifies the Rock-pool. And Crea-linn, in the Gaelic, signifies the Clay-pool.
The old parish of Crailing is intersected, from South to North, by the Oxnam Water, which here enters the Teviot immediately above, on the Oxnam, lies the Barony of Upper Crailing, which is now included in Jedburgh Parish - |

The origin of the name of Nisbet is somewhat doubtful, though there cannot be much doubt, whether it was imposed by the Saxon settlers here. In the ancient documents, it is variously spelt, Nesbet, Nasebet, Nesbyte and 'Nisbet': In this parish there are two places of this name, Over, and Nether Nisbet: The appellation seems generally to be connected with a Hill: In Culter parish, there is a hill called 'Nisbet Nape' and in Aloa parish, there is 'Nesbit Hill'. The position of all these places called 'Nisbet', seems to intimate, that we must look for its origin in the Saxon - Nes, Nese, Naeses, in this language signifies a promontory, a projection, the nose; and bit a piece, as we Know from [Sonn ex]: So, Nesbit would signify the 'Nose piece'. The village of 'Upper Nesbit', in this parish, stands on a ridge of land, which projects from the base of a hill which bears the name of 'Peniel-heugh', and is a point visible at the distance of many miles - This Hill has been |

rendered very conspicuous by a Monument Pillar erected on its summit by the late Marquis of Lothian, in commemoration of the Victory obtained at Wterloo - Crailing is bounded on the North & North West, by Roxburgh; on the West, by Ancrum; on the South by Jedburgh; and on the East, by Eckford - In general appearance Crailing presents that of a wide valley, with sloping banks on either side, the Teviot flowing eastward through the Centre, and dividing the parish into two nearly equal portions - The parish contains nothing memorable in the way of Antiquities, excepting the vestiges of two once strongly fortified encampments on the top of Pineil-heugh- The church is a very plain building in the exterior, but comfortable enough within. It was built about 1755, and is situated on the Crailing side of the Parish, on a small eminence about a quarter of a mile North from the Village. Forty new sittings |

were added to it about 1832, and it may contain with ease 300 persons -
Nisbet being formerly a separate parish, had its Church and Burying-Ground - of the Church scarce any trace remains, but the church yard is still used by the Inhabitants as a place of interment - For a long time after the union of the parishes, it appears that Divine Service was performed in the church at Nisbet - on alternate Sabbaths - The last notice of this, in the parish Registers, bears the date 1713 -
There are Still the ruins of the old church of Crailing; it stood close to Crailing House - After the removal of the church to its present site, and the enclosure of the new Burying Ground, Many of the Parishioners insisted on laying their Dead, where rested the dust of their "Fathers" |

A Small, Arable hill, or knowe, Southeast of and close to the village of
"Nisbet"; it gets this name from there being a large whinstone lying on its Summit. This Stone has very much puzzled geologists, to account for its presence here, as the hill on which it lies, is, a complete bed of fine sandstone, and not any whinstone to be found for nearly a mile in any direction from it. |

(Via Militaris Antoninus Iter 5th) |
Chalmers Caledonia Jeffrey's History Roxburghshire {map published by the Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge}. Itinera of Richard of Cirencester Antonini Iter Britanniarum |
015; 021 |
A portion of one of the great Roman Military Roads, called by the Saxons, the "Watling Street"; from the Saxon Wathol, a road or way. It starts from the "Praetorium" in Yorkshire, and on its way north crosses the River Tees at Pierse Bridge, where there are the remains of a station on the North bank of the River. It then proceeds by Binchester, Lanchester, and Ebchester, at which place it leaves the county of Durham, and enters the County of Northumberland. It then stretches away to Corbridge, where it passes the River Tyne; the foundations of this Bridge still exist. From Corbridge it proceeds onwards to the wall which runs between Solway & the Tyne, and |

passes it a little to the westward of Hunnum. From this place the road runs Northward, to the east of Cocklaw, Swineburn, & Chipchase Castles, to Risingham Station. After leaving Risingham, it takes a Northwest direction for about 8 miles, when it arrives at Rochester, the "Bremenium“ of the Romans, occupying a pass in the Cheviot range of mountains. After it leaves Rochester it heads straight North, and makes for the border line at the head of the Coquet, passing Holehouse, crossing Thirlmoor, and by Gammels Path, reaches Chew Green, the „Ad Finis“ of the Itinerary, at which place the Romans had a camp 1000 feet square. From "Chewgreen“ it heads to the East round a mountain called Brownhartlaw, and from thence proceeds northward on the back of the range of Hills which send down their streams into the Coyle Water, near the Hindhopes, on the west of Blackballhill, and Resby Fell; thence by the head of ? hope and outwards for Wooden Law, and passes the |

Coyle at Towford, and in about three quarters of a mile it reaches a place called "street House", distant about 6 miles from "Chew Green“ where Agricola encamped. This street House was a Camp, form an oblong, 1700 feet long, and near 1100 in width, the one being 32 acres. From this camp it proceeds down the country to the River Jed, which it crossed, to the next station called Bonjedworth. On leaving Bonjedworth it passed the River Teviok, near to where Mounteviot stands, on to a farm place called "Howden“; and, thence by the west side of Downlaw over Lilliard's Edge, to which the road to Maxton crossed it, near to which place the Roman Road and the Edinburgh & Jedburgh Turnpike Road Coalesces. |

with each other. For three miles and a half of this part of its Course it forms the boundary between the Parish of Ancrum on the one side, and the parishes of Crailing, Roxburgh, & Maxton on the other; it then stretched away by St. Boswells, in direction of the Village of Newtown, where its course was very discernible, before it reached Bowden Burn. From Newtown it then ran straight
for the village of Eildon where there was a Station, which is believed to have been the „Trimontium“ of the Itinerary“.
It cannot be traced between the river at Nesbetmill Caul and where it is shewn to terminate above Woodside, nor Can any satisfactory evidence be obtained of its supposed direction I have had the whole matter fully investigated.
