It is the most northerly village in the Lewis, situated on a patch of good arable land, which is very much impoverished, by the Sand being blown over it from the shore in stormy weather. These huts are apparently the most wretched in the Lewis, they are, like the others, filled with dung for nine months of the year; and during the other three, they are often filled with Sand. |

The north end, and most prominent headland of Lewis. It is very much indentated by small Coves and fissures, and has a steep Rugged Coast line, which is in many parts perpendicular, and against which the sea beats with great force. It affords but one Safe landing place, or port, on the East Coast, And but one, an indifferent one, on the West, Whilst the northern Coast is almost always impracticable. Doctor McLeod states that the Whinstone dyke which is quite visible at Gress, can be seen here also, but after the most Careful search, I have been unable to find it. Many people, who are thoroughly acquainted with the Whinstone Dyke at Gress, have informed me that, there is no trace of it at the Butt of Lewis. |

The ruins of a small hut on the Summit of an arable Knoll at the Butt of Lewis. It is about twenty feet long and 12 wide, and supposed to be of great antiquity. It is said to have been built by a person called Ronaid by whom and his sister it was inhabited. The supposition that it was a church appears to be fabulous as it is not born out by Either tradition or appearances. It is said the Island of Rona also received its name from this individual who with his sister viisited it on the back of a large Whale. No part of the walls is no standing. |

A village of huts built of stone and clay, and thatched with straw. It is the most northerly village in Lewis, and situated in a patch of good arable land which is very much injured by the sand being blown over it from the shore on windy days. These huts are perhaps the most wretched in Lewis, they are like the others filled with dung for nine months of the year, And during the other three, they are often filled with the Sand which is sometimes blown about them so densely as to resemble a thick fog when seen at a distance. |
