The parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester is in the Presbytery of Dingwall, and Synod of Ross. Patron A.C.Forbes, of Culloden. It is bounded on the north west by the River Conan and Cromarty Firth, which separates it from Fodderty, Dingwall and Kiltearn; on the north and east by Resolis; on the east by Avoch, Kilmuir Wester & Suddie, and Killearnan (Detd.); [Detached] on the south east by Killearnan, and on the south and south west by Urray. The parish comprises three districts. Urquhart forms the northeastern, Logie Wester the south western, and the well known detached district of Nairnshire, called Ferrintosh forms the centre of the parish. There are no detached portions of this parish and there are no detached portions of any other parish situated within it, but as stated above the district of Ferrintosh forms a detached part No. [Number] 5 of the County of Nairn. Please see Correspondence at the end of this book referring to this subject. The districts of Urquhart, Logie Wester, & Ferrintosh are now obsolete, and the three ancient districts are now known for all purposes as the Parish of "Urquhart and Logie Wester", the centre portion being in the Co. [County] Nairn (Detd) [Detached] |

Dear Sir Kenneth,
The spelling of
your house and Mains has been
given to my men as "Conan House"
"Conan Mains" Many other
objects in the vicinity take their
name apparently from the river i.e.
"Conon Inn" Conon Station" Conon
"Village" Will you Kindly in-
form me if you approve of
the mode of spelling in the
two first named instances ap-
pearing on the Ordnance Plans?
Yrs. [Yours] very truly

Sir Kenneth Mackenzie Bart. [Baronet]

2nd May
My Dear Sir
I always spell
Conan with an "a" and it
is only due to the accidental
mis-spelling of the Inn sign-
board that the name has
come to be spelt differently
in the other cases you refer
to. The Station and the Post
Office are however now Known
officially as Conon and I
suppose the spelling cannot
now be altered, but I should
like my own house and farm
to be spelt Conan.
I thank you for your
enquiries about this & I am
yours very fauthfully
(signed) Kenneth S. MacKenzie
P.S. I do not Know if you take
note in the survey of the manner
in which the land is divided
into properties, and of the bound
aries which separate these pro-
perties If you do I should like
to examine the boundary line you
have laid down between my pro-
perty and that of Mr. Forbes of
Culloden in Ferrintosh, as we
have a trifling difference about
it which is to be settled as soon
as he returns to this part of the
country.
Ordnance Survey Office
Inverness
5th May .72
Dear Sir Kenneth,
We do not take
note of private boundaries on
our maps. It often happens
that a public boundary is also
a private boundary and this may
be the case in what you allude
to between you & Mr. Forbes of
Culloden. I Know there are
some parish boundaries in the
Black Isle not finally adjusted,

Mr. Forbes, I am however to
hear more from him on the
subject. You are quite at
liberty to inspect these Sketch
Maps whenever convenient
to you to call at this office.
As regards the spelling
"Conon" I must make further
inquiries & I thank you for
the information contained
in your letter.

This name applies to an artificial Mound of a Rectangular form and flat on top with a trench surrounding it about 34 feet wide at the top by 5 or 6 at the bottom and about 10 or 11 deep the Interior of the Mound or fort is raised about 8 or 10 feet abiove the General surface and presents no appearance of ever having abreast work around it. By whoom [second "o" crossed out] it was erected or for what purpose, or why it is called "David's Fort" I could not find out as both History and Tradition of this portion of the County appear to be both limited and vague. Applied to a sort of concentric cairn of stones, much resembling the pictish Towers of Sutherlandshire. but I could get no information about its date or for what purpose it was built. It is known only as the Carn Mhor ["h" crossed out], which translated into English means the large Cairn.
This has evidently been a fort as it is similar in many respects, only larger, to a chain of the same kind of entrenchments which may be found extending from Cromarty by Beauly through Strathglass, it is of a circular form, the inner embankment or parapet being composed of stone and earth, and surrounded by a deep trench. Human bones found in the interior of Intrenchment A.D. 1859. |

This name applies to what is commonly supposed to have been a stone circle Captain Warren who is a good authoraty on these matters cannot determine whether it has been a pictish Tower or stone circle but supposes it to have been the latter as there is one small stone yet standing near the western side of it about 2 1/2 feet high by about 2 feet broad This circle has all the characteristics of a Danish fort the inner circle is on the highest point of the small hill and has been strongly built with large stones and earth all of which has been removed Except the under row of stones the inner circle has also been surrounded buy a rampart wall also made of stones and earth where the dotted line is shown on tracing which is still about Eighteen Inches above the general surface. It is on the Property of Arthur Forbes Esqr Cullodan House
Note added - This object having been referd a second time to the sup. of the Examination section in Ross-shire, It has been decided to write the name on plan as "Stone Circle" (Remains of) as no information can be gleaned on the ground of its being a Danish or British Fort, but the prevelant belief is ["is" underlined] that it was a "Stone Circle" |

United Parishes of Urquhart and Loggie Wester
This parish, now known by the name of Urquhart, is in all
church records designated the united parishes of Urquhart and ------- A name sheet supplied
Loggie Wester; the former, comprehending the eastern, and the latter, ------- for proper spelling
the western district of the parish as now constituted. ------- of Parish Name
Urquhart derives its name, according to a tradition still current in
the place, from the first church, on the erection of the parish, having been
built by a lady of the name, Sophia Urquhart, in Gaelic, Sitheag Etrachdun.
Loggie, the name of the other parish, is a Gaelic word (Laggie, from
Lag) signifying a hollow, and is descriptive of the Situation of
the old church of that parish, the ruins of which are still to be seen ------- Shewn and Described
on the south bank of the river Conan.
From the shore and the bank of the Conan, the ground rises with a
gradual and pretty uniform slope, to the ridge of hill called the
Maolbuie. The surface is nearly regular, there being nothing to diversify ------- Written & Described
it, beyond here and there a knoll or hollow.
The Findon-burn has a fine cascade of about 20 feet, which, pouring
its waters into a yawning gorge, formed by a sudden widening
of the fissure on each side. This gloomy chasm was, in olden times,
fully believed by the common people to be the abode of some ideal
being, called in Gaelic a' Bhaobh, or a' Bhean Shith. ------- Now known as the Raven's Rock
Among the splendid mansions of gentlemen may be enumerated
Brahan Castle, Tulloch Castle, Mountgerald House, the princely ------- These names are not

In the distance, again, rises to the horizon a range of hills piled on
one another, extending in the form of a crescent for about 25 miles
commencing with the hills of Urray on the west, and terminating
in the hills of Ardross in the east. In the centre of this chain sits in
majesty Ben Wyvis, often either capped with snow, or enveloped in
mist, and resting its lofty front, as if looking down with contempt
on every pretender for elevation around it.

Culbokie is the only other village. ------- Written and Described
The Bridge thrown over the Conan, at the village called by that ------- Written and Described

fabric. It is built of durable free stone and the cost of erection

Antiquities. - The names of places throughout the parish
are evidently of Gaelic origin. At the S.W. [South West] extremity of the
parish, in an extensive high but level moor, there are several
tumuli, or large conical heaps of Stones. There is not any ------- shewn
tradition as to the particular occasion of collecting them.
By the directions of the proprietor, one of them was lately laid
open, when three stone coffins were found in it ranged in a
line from east to west.
Ferries. - There are two or three ferries in this parish, ------- Written and Described
one of them is at its eastern extremity and opposite to
Fowlis, from whence it has its name. Towards the west end
of the parish on the river of Conan, and beyond where the
tide at any time flows, is the ferry of Scuddale, on the post road
from Beauly to Dingwall. Besides these ferries, there is a small
boat for foot passengers, which, at high water, plies between
Dingwall and Ferrintosh. On the tide's retiring, and when the
river is not high, there is access to Dingwall from this side of the
water by different fords. Some of these fords have a zig-zag
direction, which they retain amidst partial variations, to
which all of them are very subject, from the united force of
high tides, and frequent swellings of the river. These circum-
stances, together with the rapid flowing of the tide at particular
times, render this a hazardous passage, which proves fatal to many.
