The town of Tain is pleasantly situated on the south bank of the Dornoch Firth, its streets are regular, its houses mostly two or three storey high and in general good repair, it has the usual public buildings of a County Town, Number of Inhabitants about 2000. Principal proprietor the Duke of Sutherland. Tain is a market town, these markets are held fortnightly for Corn and the Cattle markets are held once in three months.
