090 This name applies to the ancient Cathedral of Ross two small parts of which edifice are still standing. They consist of the south aisle to chancel and nave, and the detached Chapter house. The former is not roofed & considering its great age is in good preservation & affords a fine idea of ancient architecture. The latter has been partly rebuilt & turned into a Courthouse for the burgh of Fortrose. The rest of the structure was demolished by Cromwell, who sent the stones to Inverness for the erection of a fort there which bears his name. There are three stone Coffins in the aisle & two stone fonts & several other remains of an interesting nature still intire indicative of the great beauty & importance the structure possessed originally - whether it was dedicated or not cannot be ascertained as very little information regarding it is Known in the neighbourhood.
"The seal of the Cathedral, or Diocesan Seal, is yet preserved and used as the public seal of the burgh, with this inscription in Saxon character" + Scapituli scou Petri et Bonefacii de Roseomarkin". St Peter stands on it with his Keys, and Boniface with his crook in excellent order" See Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] for further information.
