The parish of Resolis is in the Prebytery of Chanonory, Synod of Ross. It is bounded on the north and west by the Cromarty Firth; on the south west by the Parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester; on the south east by the parish of Avoch; and on the east by the parish of Cromarty and Cromarty Firth. There are no detached portions of this parish and there are no detached portions of any other parish situated within it. Two portions of the parish of Resolis are in the County of Ross. No. [Number] 1 is situated at the extreme N.E. [North East] point of the parish and it contains the hamlets of Balbair and Newhallpoint, and the farmsteadings of Chapelton and Kirkton. It forms a detached part No. [Number] 1 of the County Ross. It is not known at present if there is any more det. [detached] portions of Ross consequently no number is shown on the Plans to this detd. [detached] portion.
The other portion forms part of the main body of the county of Ross and is situated in the South West and belongs to the parish of Resolis adjoining the parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester. |

Revd. [Reverend] Sir
I forward to you a Printed
Form containing a List of Authorities
for the spelling of the name of Your
Parish, and as a doubt arises whether
it should be written Resolis (being a
modern name) or Kirkmichael and
Cullicudden, (being the ancient name)
Will you have the goodness to write in
the second column of the Printed Form
the proper and legal name which you
would recommend to be written on
the Ordnance Plans.
You will much oblige by stating
the cause of changing the Ancient

Lieut [Lieutenant] A. B. Coddington R.E. [Royal Engineers]
Sir
In reply to the above I beg
to state that Resolis is made up
of the two Old Parishes of Kirkmichael
and Cullicudden, the ruins of the two Churches
being still visible & the Church yards attached
the only ones in use - During the incumbency
of the Rev [Reverend] Mr McPhail 1748-74 the present
Parish Church was built in the Centre of
the United Parish & on a farm then
called Resolis - from its exposure to the
sea. Hence the name Resolis
now universally used except in ecclesi-
astical documents.
The Session Records do not extend
further back than 1821 & there the
name Resolis (always so spelled) is the

usual one. I find however on the old
Communion Cups 'Resolus'.
As there are so many Kirkmichaels
in Scotland & as the Parish is now
all over the north both in Gaelic
& English always called Resolis
it is surely better to give up the
antiquated Kirkmichael & Cullicudden.
I may mention the parallel case of
Glenorchay (Head of Lochaw) which in the
Presbytery Records is still called "Clachan
andisait" -
I am
Sir
Yours very obediently

The following is copied from the Old Statistical Account Vol. [Volume] 14 page 97. "There is a greater number of Ancient encampments in this, than in any other parish in the north; from tradition and the general's tent being cirular, they are supposed to have been formed by the Danes when they invaded Scotland. It is hypothesis, that from the eminence on which these entrenchments are most numerous, there is an extensive prospect in all directions, to prevent their being surprised in their Camp; and as they are seldom found above a mile from the shore, if they should have been surprised and defeated by the natives, they could easily have retired on board the ships and landed in some other part of the country, where the inhabitants were not in force to oppose them. |

Ross-shire
Remarks on the Plans, &c.
On plan 66/9 the parish of
Resolis the name "Inverbreakie ferry"
is written to two houses, and
"Inverbreakie and Invergordon ferry"
is written to the ferry at the
same place. On plan 66/2 of
the parish of Rosskeen the
name "Inverbrekie" is written
to a farm house. Is there
any reason why the spelling
of the name should not be
similar on both these plans?

Replies
Colonel Parsons,
The spelling of the
name ought to be similar
on both these plans.
I enclose herewith correspon-
dence on the subject
with the Proprietor, also
with Captain Macpher-
son.
I have today seen the
Proprietor, and from my
conversation with him
I am led to consider
"Inverbrekie" to be the
spelling most in accord-
ance with modern
custom.
I am desired to ask you
to change the name on
66/9 if this spelling is
adopted
I regret that this question
was necessarily detained
till my return from Shetland.

I am greatly obliged

From information I have
received from the ferry,
it would appear that
in the act it is called
Inverbrakie, also it seems
that the oldest obtained
name is so spelt, the
form Inverbrekie appearing
at a later date, in 1750
as you very Kindly informed

Under these circumstances
would it not be

This name applies to the Remains of a large Cairn of Stones It was about thirty feet in diameter and fifteen feet high about the year 1835: but has Since been Removed for farm purposes all but a few loose stones lying on the surface of the Ground; It is supposed there was a fierce battle fought near this spot and that the Cairn was Erected to mark the Burial place of one of the Slain Chieftans, but who the contending Parties were or at what date it occurred cannot be ascertained |

United Parish of
Kirkmichael and Cullicudden
Better known by its more modern name of Resolis
Of this united parish the eastern division is Kirkmichael.
Its Gaelic name is "Kil a' Mhichail,"or the Cell of St Michael;
but this name is by the inhabitants usually given only to the ------- Church written &
church and burying ground. The district which the ancient ------- Described
parish of Kirkmichael comprehended is called "Sgire a'
Mhichail," or the parish of St Michael. Cullicudden forms
the Western district of the united parish. Its Celtic name
is Coull a' Chuddinn or Chuddegin, signifying the Cuddie
Creek, - that species of fish being formerly, though not now,
caught in great abundance in a small creek on the shore
of Cullicudden, and a little to the west of the Old Church.
It is probable, however, that St Martin's, or Kirk Martin, and
not Cullicudden, was the name originally of this small but
ancient parish. It is still called by the natives Sgire a'
Mhartinn, or the parish of St Martin's; and at the place of
St Martin's, a small farm near its western extremity the ------- Shewn
foundation of a Church, surrounded by a burying ground not
now occupied, may still be seen. The probabilty is, therefore,
that the parish Church, dedicated to St Martin of Tours. was
originally at the place of St Martin's; but the Church being after-
wards removed to the more centrical place of Cullicudden, the
parish from this circumstance came to be so called.
The united parish of Kirkmichael and Cullicudden,
though still so called in old deeds and in the records of
[Presbytery], is better Known by its more modern name of ------- Name Sheet with
Resolis, (Ri-sholuis, i.e. the field or ridge of light) and the ------- Authorities supplied
united parish got this name from the circumstance that the
manse first, and a few years afterwards the church was built,
and the glebe designated by excambion at the place of Resolis,
as the most centrical about the year 1767. After the present
church was built, the two old churches were suffered to fall
into

into decay. The gables of both are still standing. That
of Kirkmichael contains the old bell, which is occa- ------- No Bell here at present

The united parish lies partly in the counties of Ross and
Cromarty within the district called an Oilean Dubh or
the Black Isle, on the south side of the Cromarty Frith ------- Written & Described
From the shores of the Frith, the land rises gradually for
nearly two miles, then sinks into a valley; on the south side of
which, it again rises rather abruptly until it terminates in
the summit of a hill called the Maole Buidhe, (the yellow ------- Written & Described
brow or ridge) The top of this hill, which is the precise boun-
dary of the parish to the south, is called Ard Meadhonach, ------- Written Cnoc nan [C---]
or high midland, as it through the very centre of the Black Isle
and may be about 800 feet above the level of the sea.
Mr James Fraser of Brae, was a native of this parish, and
the only son of Sir James Fraser of Brae, one of the heritors, and ------- Written & Described
third son of Hugh, seventh Lord Lovat. The house in which he
was born in 1639 is still standing, and is occupied at present ------- The only passage of

be observed of ancient encampments, and of monuments of
hard fought fields. A tradition is still current among the
people, of a sanguinary conflict fought on the moor which ------- Is not this known by the name of

the parish name to Resolis; but doubt if this would hold good
in a Suit of Law for I believe neither the parish name nor the Boundaries
of a parish can be changed without an Act of Parliament.
Suppose the parish Church was removed to another district
