OS1/28/17/77 [page] 77 O [Ordnance] Survey Munlochy 28th Decr [December] 1869 Lieut [Lieutenant] Coddington R.E. [Royal Engineers] Sir, In accordance with your order of the 21st Decr [December] I have again Called on the Authorities with respect to the proper mode of writing this Parish name on the Ordnance Survey Plans. Mr Greig Schoolmaster. Session clerk, and Registrar of the Parish, States that he would recommend the adoption of Knockbain as the Parish name as he uses it now in all the returns he has occasion to fill up. James Cameron Esqr. Factor Balnakyle Still adheres to the Name Kilmuir Wester and Suddie Commonly called Knockbain [and] recommends that is should [be] written as Such on the Ordnance Survey Plans. Mr R. Williamson the Parish Minister states that [the] name of the Parish is [Kilmuir] Wester and Suddie [continued on page 78]
OS1/28/17/78 [page] 78 [continued from page 77] as you will See by his remark on Your Memo. and his reply to my half margin hereon annexed. On maKing enquiries with respect to the changing of the Ph [Parish] name to Knockbain it took place in 1756 when the Parishes of Kilmuir Wester & Suddie were united. The church was built on a peice of ground named Knockbain and So the Ph [Parish] name became changed. I have made many enquiries and from the information gained I believe the Proper name of the Ph [Parish] is Kilmuir Wester and Suddie, locally termed Knockbain as an easier name to term it by, in Correspondence or Conversation. William S. Murray Sapper R.E. [Royal Engineers]
OS1/28/17/79 Kilmuir Wester and Suddie commonly called Knockbain Rev. [Reverend] Robert Williamson Parish Minister The Rev. [Reverend] R. Williamson states that the Parishes of Kilmuir Wester and Suddie were separate parishes some years ago but were united and received the name of Knockbain, and that when he has occasion to use the Ph. [Parish] name on any document he invariably describes it as "Kilmuir Wester and Suddie commonly called Knockbain."
OS1/28/17/79 Kilmuir Wester and Suddie commonly called Knockbain Mr. Greig Schoolmaster & Session Clerk. Schoolhouse Munlochy.
OS1/28/17/79 Kilmuir Wester and Suddie commonly called Knockbain Presbytery Records The Presbytery Records show that the union of Kilmuir Wester and Suddie took place in the year 1756, and Mr. Greig states that Knockbain is now generally used in all Public documents.
OS1/28/17/79 Kilmuir Wester and Suddie commonly called Knockbain James Cameron Esqr. Factor for the Estates of Kilcoy and Drainie Mr. Cameron. Balnakyle states that Kilmuir Wester and Suddie is the Ph. [Parish] name but he believes that Knockbain is generally used for shortness.
