The old Castle was the residence of
the Macleods of Lewis who possessed the
whole Island for three hundred years
the last of that name was Rory McLeod
or old Rory as he was usually named
died during the minority of James the
Sixth of Scotland when the whole Island
was ceded by the then Government to Three
members of the Privy Council viz
Lord Balmarine These others who took
posession and established large Colonies
for the purpose of fishing and Civilising.
The Inhabitants who were at that period
a very Barbarous & piratical race and
the traditional history of that period
as handed down to us assents that the
natural sons of Old Rory attempted
to settle in the Castle from which they
were expelled by the Fife Settlers and
the Castle demolished that they might
