The ruin of a church on the sea shore, which is about 45 links long, by 30 linKs wide. The walls are about 5 feet high. Tradition says nothing about it, beyond that it was much resorted to by Catholics in former times; so much so, that they came from all the adjacent islands, on a pilgrimage to it. It was built of stone and mortar, with a loft. Attached to it is a graveyard in which are two vaults. Signifies Holy Fold Temple. |

About 100 years ago the interior was used as a burying ground, but there are no traditional stories regarding either Church or grave yard. It would appear that the Church was dedicated to Saint Bridget. Signifies Bridget's Temple. |

[situation] Lies on the western side of the road from Stornoway to Ness 18 miles from the former, and 9 miles from the latter plan.
A large and populous village on the left of the road from Stornoway to Ness. It extends about a mile and a half, from the 17 mile stone, and is composed of four Smaller ones, viz. Borgh Mòr, Bail Ard, Bor[gh] Mheadhonach, and Mealabost. The houses are built of sods and thatched with straw. Owing to the roughness and shallowness of the adjacent Coast, it is almost impossible to fish, except in the Summer Season, So that the people for the most part have to rely on the produce of the land for their support. This is a large and populous Village on the left of the road from Stornoway to Ness extending from 17 to 18 1/2 Miles from the former place, it comprehends four smaller ones viz. Borgh Mhor or Cuig Peghinnean, Bail Ard, Borgh Mheadhonach, and Mhealabost, The houses as usual are built of Stone and Sods and thatched with Straw in the rudest manner; Owing to the Roughness and Shallowness of the adjacent Coast it is mostly unfit for fishing throughout the year except for a few months in the Summer Season So that the people for the most part have to rely on the produce of the land for their Support, a very large extent of arable land is attached which is Considered tolerably good, there is also a large extent of moor pasture attached which is bad and much broken and yeilds very poor pasture either to Sheep or Cattle although a Great Stock of both is Kept upon it. The Cattle are principally fed during winter by the Seaweeds driven ashore by Sea and Tide &c. This village was till within 5 or 6 years back a most noted (Turn over) [continued on page 64] |

There is a rock or Shoal Called Bogha Chearcain from which this hill takes its name about 2 or 3 miles in a north west line from the Summit of this hill which is large and extending in the Same direction for Seven or eight miles out to Sea, but not So Shallow as to do any injury to Vessels or Boats as the Shallowest part at Spring tides has about four fathoms of water over it. turn over.
