003 | [situation] In the centre of the plan, on the Butt of Lewis 40 chains W [West] by N [North] of Cuig Peghinnean Village. A village of huts, built of stone and clay, and thatched with straw. It is the most northerly village in the Lewis, situated on a patch of good arable land, which is very much impoverished, by the Sand being blown over it from the shore in stormy weather. These huts are apparently the most wretched in the Lewis, they are, like the others, filled with dung for nine months of the year; and during the other three, they are often filled with Sand. |
