001.04 A large village on the shores of the Firth of Clyde about three miles south west from Greenock entirely feued from the estate of Major Darroch.
The original part of the village fronts Gourock Bay. from Gourock Burn to Kempock Point, and in 1694 was erected into a Burgh of Barony by charter from King William & Queen Mary.
It is now greatly extended especially towards the south west,where there is a great number of handsome villas occupied principally during summer by gentlemen and their families from Glasgow etc.
Near Kempock Point there is an excellent Pier where Steamers call at all states of the Side. In the village there an an Established Church & School a Free Church & School, an United Presbyterian Church and a school of Industry, three Hotels and numerous other Public Houses.
A number of the inhabitants are employed in Fishing and in working in the extensive whinstone and Sandstone Quarries in the neighbourhood and a great number derive a livliehood from letting apartments to, and supplying the wants of the numerous visitors who frequent the village during the summer months,
