Note: After 'the oldest church in the parish' the writer originally had 'of an almost octagonal shape with a square indistinctly tracable in the inside', but this has been crossed out in red, presumably by J.C.G.
Note: "The Kirk of Killallan is still standing (in 1791)
and the roof entire. The heritors were empowered,
by the decreet of annexation, to sell the Manse, which
was a bad house, and the glebe, to enable them to
build a church at Houstown, sufficient to
accomodate the inhabitants of both parishes."

This is evidently a camp & from its construction I shd. [should] suppose it Danish. The rampart is perfect - steep on the S. [South] and eastern sides. It is a perfect circle. Entrance on the north side. The tradition in the county is that the Romans had a church here. J.C.G. |

The ruins of what was formerly the "Parish Church" of Killallan before the Parish became united to Houston. Everything connected with this old edifice has been removed or decayed nothing now remains but the bare walls. There is a Burial Ground surrounding the Church, still used, enclosed by [a] wall 5 feet high. It appears, from "Crawfurd's History of Renfrew", that this Church was [a] dependency of the Monastry of Peasley, from the year 1225. "Chalmers" calls it St. Fillan's Church, which statement is supported in a great measure by Fullarton in his "Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland". |

This is applicable to a stone cross Situated on an eminence about 9 chains east of the farm Steading of that name. It stands upon a pedestal about 3 feet. The cross, including the pedestal, stands about 11 or 12 feet high. There are indentations in the stone which are supposed to be marks or hieroglyphies, but so much defaced that they cannot be tracable. Walter King and others, suppose that a battle took place here between the Scotts and Danes in which the latter were defeated, and that the Cross was erected by the former in commemoration of the event. Crawfurd, in his History of Renfrew, calls it a "Danish Stone, which is called Barochan Cross, full of wreathed work, such as lions and other wild beasts". These would be difficult to decipher. 007.07 |
An excellent Mansion house surrounded by wood. Plantations, Gardens, Ornamental or Pleasure grounds and Offices. The residence of the Misses Fleming. The Oldest part of the Mansion is a Square Tower, situated about the centre and forms a very conspicuous portion of the building. There is an ascent in the inside by means of winding stairs of stone to the top, and is elevated above the rest of the building 20 feet or thereabouts. It is not clearly known when this Tower was erected, but it is generally believed to be more than 500 years old, and no doubt connected with the Old Mansion house of Barochan which was situated on a neighbouring height to the east. (See Gazetteer, and Description of Barochan Cross, also Craufurds Hist. [History] of Renfrew.) The next in point of age are the wings north and east of the Tower. The exterior walls are marked on trace in strong |

A Substantial Stone building of modern Architecture with Turret or Bellfry attached on the top, at the South-west side: surrounded by a wall which encloses a "Burial Ground". This Church, which is the Established one of the Parish, appears to have been renew'd about the year 1768, shortly before the parishes of Houston and Killallan were united. A part of the Ancient Church of Houston; Dedicated to St. Peter, as mentioned in "Chalmers Caledonia", occupies a portion of the East wing of this Church. Extent shown on Traces. It is now used as the "Session house". Mr. Walter King, Builder and Architect, from his knowledge, considers this portion to be very Ancient, the style of Architecture (which is Gothic) being different from that chosen in the construction of the remainder of the building. The walls are also stronger, being more than 4 feet broad. Owing to alterations made, the flooring of this part has been raised 6 or 8 feet above the level of the ground floor of the Church. It was within this place, and beneath the present flooring, where the remains of many of the Houstonic family were enterred.

An ancient structure surrounded with woods, gardens and Ornamental grounds. Stands on an eminence overlooking the plain particularly towards the east. The walls are massive with Antique windows in front, those at the back and east side are elevated considerably above ground. This structure formed the East Wing of the Castle a baronial residence of the Ancient family of Houstoun. In its perfect state it formed a complete Square with a large area in the inside having vaults etc. At the North-west corner stood a very high Tower. On the south were two Turrets, between which was a main entry into the area, arched above, secured by a Portcullis. Crawfurd, in his History states that it was one of the strongest and most ancient in the Country. The whole, except the Portion now standing, was destroyed about the year 1780 by Mr. Macrae then proprietor. |

"The mansion house of Houstoun was also very
ancient. There was a large and very high tower,
on the N.W. [North-West] corner, which was the most ancient part
of the building, with a lower house joined to the east
end of the tower, with Vaults below, & a very long &
wide paved hall above, with antique windows in the
front, & without plaister in the roof. The timbers
of the roof were arched, and made of Mossy oak."
"The building was a real fortification, being
large, and built on an elevated situation, it had
a lordly appearance, overlooking the whole plain
towards Paisley & Glasgow. About 10 years ago it
was demolished, except the east side." The building
is said to have been originally a religious of the
Monks of the Cistertian order."

The village of Houston is situated near the South-eastern part of the parish, North and South of Houston Burn, and on the road between Greenock and Paisley. About 70 years ago, when the old Mansion House of Houston was demolished by Mr Macrae, the stones belonging to the building were used for building the New Town, which was planned about that time, and feued for building. Since that period the village has increased in size. It chiefly consists of two streets, the houses on each side of which are regular and have a Substantial Appearance. The Old Village of Houston Stood near the Parish Church; was demolished [] after the New one was finished. In the village are 3 places of Worship, 3 Schools, 1 Hall, and Post Office, 1 Inn, and 2 Public Houses. A cattle fair is held in the Month of May. The population about |

This is applicable to a very remarkable feature North of "Gryfe Castle" of natural formation, though it would appear to be artificial towards the top? At the top is a perfectly level space almost rectangular. To the east of this, joining the same space is a kind of platform of similar construction but much smaller. The centre of this is occupied by a flagstaff and Trig. [Trigonometrical] Station
From the east side of the whole a gradual slope is formed becoming more abrupt as it approaches the South and West sides, thence towards the North where it converges again towards the East.
"Crawfurd" considers this to be the vestage of an "old Camp", and Mr. Carlisle states that Signals were made here to other places in the country during the various disruptions. Mr. Gemmel supposes this to be a place where justice was administered in "old Times". |

A circular Mound or Mont slightly elevated and planted with fir and forest trees. The public road from "Houston" to the "Bridge of Weir" passes directly through the North Part of it. It is stated by a few of the oldest Inhabitants, such as Mr. Barbour, Mr. Carlisle, and others, that a "Cairn" of stones was inclosed in this place; the stones which formed the Cairn were so numerous, that after their removal they were used to construct the wall which connects the two Mounds at the present time. One of the authorities quoted (Mr. Carlisle) states, that by tradition, it is supposed that the Houstouns of "Houstoun" and the Knoxes of "Ranfurly", held their Tournaments here. Two other authorities quoted viz-: Mr. Barbour and Mr. King, "Woodend", suppose this object with that on the North, which is recognised as the "North Mound", to mark the scene of a conflict between two opposite Parties, at a very remote period, and consequently agree with the statement made in the "Old Statistical Acct. [Account]" The parties (or those who were opposed to each other) alluded to in the "Old Sta. [Statistical] Acct. [Account]" are supposed by the above authorities to be the Mures of "Caldwell", and the |

Note: "About ½ a mile S.W.[south-west] of Houstoun Mansion house, there
is a mount composed of a vast number of small
Stones, in which was found one of the like stone coffins;
and opposite to it, directly northward, there is another
of the same kind, composed of earth and small Stones,
in a circular form. They were both lately enlarged,
enclosed, and planted with forest trees. These two
mounds may have been the ground of two opposite
camps of warriors, fighting near the place where
the stone coffins were found".

Houstouns of "Houstoun". In consequence of a private dispute or quarrel between these two Houses, the retainers belonging to both were collected upon opposite grounds. When a conflict took place between them, the Mounds are the supposed Grounds whereon they stood. It is not known that any remains were ever found within this "mound", or in the other, but it is supposed, that if the Conflict, as above stated, took place, those who fell were interred in them. On account of the statements made in the "Old Stat. [Statistical] Acct. [Account]", and other records, in reference to remains having been found in Stone Coffins, Urns and other receptacles, in various Parts of this Parish, at different times; the oldest and most influential authorities have been Consulted. Such as those above enumerated, and the result has been that only two places, (Viz-: near the "Chapel" farm steading, and the place marked a little to the south of this Mound,) are so far known or discovered to these Parties. At the place marked on trace, south of the "Mound" was found, some years ago. a Stone Coffin containing human bones. |

"About 20 years ago, when the country people in
this parish were digging for Stones to enclose their
farms, they met with Several chests or coffins of
flag stones, set on their edges, Sides, and ends, and
covered with the same sort of Stones above, in which
were many human bones of a large size, & several Sculls
in some of them" - The ground where these stone Coffins
were found was a little raised, with a mixture of small
stones and earth, in the form of a barrow or tumulus."

"The Parishes of Houston and
Killallan were united in 1760.
The former may be supposed to
be a corruption of Hew's toon.
The latter is a corruption of Killy
i.e. Cilla Fillani, the name of a
tutelary Saint of the parish."
It is bounded on the north and northeast by Erskine, the east and south by Killallen and on the west by Kilmalcolm. Its extreme length, from east to west is about 5 Miles, breadth from north to south about 3.
The Antiquities of the parish are interesting, and will be described in the following pages of this book.
There are no detached portions of any other parish in this parish or of this in any other.
