007.15 | A circular Mound or Mont slightly elevated and planted with fir and forest trees. The public road from "Houston" to the "Bridge of Weir" passes directly through the North Part of it. It is stated by a few of the oldest Inhabitants, such as Mr. Barbour, Mr. Carlisle, and others, that a "Cairn" of stones was inclosed in this place; the stones which formed the Cairn were so numerous, that after their removal they were used to construct the wall which connects the two Mounds at the present time. One of the authorities quoted (Mr. Carlisle) states, that by tradition, it is supposed that the Houstouns of "Houstoun" and the Knoxes of "Ranfurly", held their Tournaments here. Two other authorities quoted viz-: Mr. Barbour and Mr. King, "Woodend", suppose this object with that on the North, which is recognised as the "North Mound", to mark the scene of a conflict between two opposite Parties, at a very remote period, and consequently agree with the statement made in the "Old Statistical Acct. [Account]" The parties (or those who were opposed to each other) alluded to in the "Old Sta. [Statistical] Acct. [Account]" are supposed by the above authorities to be the Mures of "Caldwell", and the |

Note: "About ½ a mile S.W.[south-west] of Houstoun Mansion house, there
is a mount composed of a vast number of small
Stones, in which was found one of the like stone coffins;
and opposite to it, directly northward, there is another
of the same kind, composed of earth and small Stones,
in a circular form. They were both lately enlarged,
enclosed, and planted with forest trees. These two
mounds may have been the ground of two opposite
camps of warriors, fighting near the place where
the stone coffins were found".
