Sir,
I observe my home is marked
on the Ordnance as "Ellen Bank".
It is and has always been called Elm-
bank. It is situated on the shore
on the north side of Eldon Street
and south side of Clyde street.
I hope you will get this great
mistake corrected.
I am,
Sir,
Yours most

A very extensive cemetery belonging to and situated a short distance west from the town of Greenock, It was formed in 1846 at an expense of about £3,000. The grounds are nearly surrounded on every side by a high stone wall and the numerous carriage drives and walks are laid off with great taste, There are a great number of very neat monuments, The largest - and a very elegant one - is placed near the centre of the grounds, in memory of Walter Baine M.P. [Member of Parliament] For the burgh a number of years since, Stones are also being collected from all parts of the world to erect a monument to James Watt of Steam Engine celebrity. The site selected is on the highest part near the northern end of the grounds, - at the west end of the Esplanade is the burial place of Robert Wallace of Kelly formerly member of parliament for the burgh, A small portion of the grounds near the office is consecrated and set apart as a burying place for members of the English Ch. County Map |
|
"The name of Greenock may be derived, from the British Graeanag, signifying a gravelly or sandy place; or, from the Gaelic Grianach, signifying a sunny place. Both these terms are sufficiently applicable to the Site of Greenock, which has a sandy, and gravelly soil; and is finely exposed to the sun, on the margin of a beautiful bay"
It is bounded on the north by the Firth of Clyde, on the east by Port Glasgow, on the east and South by Kilmacolm, and on the west by Innerkip - Its extreme length, from North to South, is about 5 miles; its extreme breadth from east to west, about 2½
There are but few antiquities in the parish, and these are not very interesting. There is no portion of this parish detached nor is there a detached portion of any other within this
