This parish forms the south east corner of Renfrewshire. It is bordered on the N. [North] West by Mearns, from which it is separated by the Earn Water, on the South West and South by Fenwick Loudon in Ayrshire, and on the East by Carmunnock and E. [East] Kilbride in Lanarkshire. The White Cart Water rising in the moor [of] Eaglesham and E. [East] Kilbride divides Renfrewshire] from Lanarkshire as far as Cathcart Eaglesham forms part of the grant made by David I to Walter, founder of the house of Stuart, and was by him transferred to Philip de Montgomerie, about 1160 (see old ballad - Memorables of the Montgomeries, 1600) or according to other authorities to Robert de Montgomerie (see gazetteer.) It remained in the family until the present Earl of Eglinton Sold it to the Messrs. Gilmour in 1844. |

May 5th 1856.
Sir, Mr Mather, the factor, is
desirous that the name
"Blackwoodhill Dam"
be written on plan in
preference to "Loch Goin".
Nearly the whole of the loch
is on the lands of
Blackwoodhill in this Ph [parish],
& only a very small part
of it on the lands of Loch
Goin in the adjoining

Soame Burn, if spelled
as pronounced by the common
people, would be written Souan
Burn, as Mr Byrne has given
it on his Fenwick traces - But
I think he is wrong. On Mr.
Gilmour's Estate map, the name
Soame Burn occurs, and
Soame Bridge on Ainslie's Ph. [Parish]

spelling is the same, and as
I have given it.
The same remarks apply to
Soame Bridge, which on the Fenwick
traces is styled Souan Bridge

Eaglesham Ph. [Parish]
Old Stat. [Statistical] Account. Page 117
Yr. [Year] 1791
"Before the village was built, which gives it's name to this parish,
there were several woods in it, particularly one of great extent on
the banks of the river, an English mile south of the village. This
wood & the rocks in this neighbourhood, were much frequented
by eagles; & as they often perched on the holm, or low ground,
where afterwards the village was built, it was thence called
Eaglesholm, or Eaglesham. Others derive the name from
Ecclesia-holm, or, the church in the hollow."
Page 119.
"Several rivulets rise out of the muirs of Eaglesham, and fall
into the River Cart, on the East side of the parish. This river
takes it's rise out of the muirs of Kilbride & Eaglesham, about four
miles south of the village of Eaglesham; & in it's course Northwards
divides the Counties of Lanark & Renfrew, and this parish
from Kilbride & Carmunnock." - "There are two mineral
springs in this parish; the one is of a purgative quality,
and when used in cases of Complaints in the Stomach, gives
immediate relief. The other is used as a remedy for
the Muir-ill in black cattle, and is Carried to a great
distance for that purpose" - "At Balegich-hill, two
miles west of the village, there have been lately observed
Several pieces of the barytes, or heavy stone. It is of a red -" |

matrix of lead. This circumstance, joined with other signs
render it probable, that there are silver & lead in this part of
the parish.- There are also found large masses of the
Osmund, which seems to be a volcanic production. It
stands the strongest heat without renting, for which
it is used in building ovens & other furnaces".

"Upon the banks of the Cart, a few miles from it's source
there is still standing a part of the walls of the Castle of
Punoon or Poinon. Sir John Montgomerie of Eaglesham
at the Battle of Otterburne, in 1388, took Henry Piercy
(the famous hotspur) prisoner, with his own hand, and
with the ransom or poind money, built that Castle
whence its name is derived"

"An old popish chapel, a very diminutive place, was
used for public worship, till within these two years
when Lord Eglinton, much to his honour, erected a
most elegant church, of an octagonal form, and
fitted it up in the best manner." |

[Left margin][--]10]. The principal Rivers are three - viz. White & Black
Cart, and the river of Grief. [note: out of Ph (Parish)]
White Cart hath its source between Eagelsham
in this shire, and Evandale & Kilbride in Clydesdale,
upon the bank of which (some few miles from its
Source) Stands first, the Castle of Punnoon, the
principal messuage of the Barony of Eagelsham
an ancient possession of the Montgommeries.
Continuation by Robertson:
"Eaglesham Parish" see Page 23.
This Parish is situated in the South-east corner of the
County, and contains 15.436 English acres. It continues
still to belong, nearly all, to the Earl of Eglinton.
The lands of Achinhood (containing the farms of
Netherton, Holehall, Holemuir and Manlouther
which, in Crawfurd's time, belonged to a Cadet of the
noble family of Eglinton, have since, in [...] been
reunited to the other property of its Chief. There are
only four other heritors in the Parish, and their properties
are comparatively Small, and who hold them as vassals
in feu of the Earl. Namely,
1. Millhall; John Mather, whose father acquired
this small, but pleasant spot, by marrying Mary, the
only surviving child of Robert Dunlop of Millhall, whose
ancestor was a younger son of Dunlop of that ilk.
The extent is about 10 acres of fertile land, on which there
is a neat small mansion, and also a mill, pleasantly
Situated on the water of White Cart, about a mile
S.E. [South east] of the village of Eagleshame. |

Anderson.
3. Muirhouse, East [and] 4. Muirhouse, West purchased in 1742, by their grandfather
from Baron Mure of Caldwell.
These two properties, lying conterminous to each other, are situated
about two miles west from Eagleshame, and partake, much
[of the] nature of the muirish Country they are surrounded with,
partly Cultivated, partly natural meadow, and partly in enough unreclaimed lands, well stocked with muir-fowl.
The extent of property in the whol parish may be stated to be

P. 383 The Parish of Eaglesham is nearly a square
about 6 miles in a direction from north to south, and 5½ miles
from East to west, it is bounded on the east by the White Cart which
Seperates it from the parishes of East Kilbride and Carmunnock,
on the north, by Mearns or Earnwater, which seperate
it from Mearns and the lands of Humbie; on the west by the parish of
[Left margin 384] Fenwick; and on the South, by the parish of Loudon.
The highest hills in the parish are Balagich, Dunwan, [Mires]
and Blackwood, which vary in height from 1000 to 1200 feet. |

The highest part of the Village is about 800 feet above the Sealevel;
the best arable lands from 500 to 800. With the exception of
Misty Law in Lochwinnoch, the above are the highest hills in
the county.
The Earnwater is a considerable stream on the north-west of the parish,
falling into the Cart at a house called St Helena; as it stands
on a sort of island formed by the junction of the two waters,
and a mill lead that joins them together. The Kevoch burn, near
the centre of the parish, is also a considerable stream. The parish
abounds everywhere in excellent springs. Two of these are mineral.
One at Munzie Hill, on the South Side of the parish, is slightly laxative;
the other, at Bonninton, on the north Side, has long been famous for
the cure of muir-ill in cattle. The most striking feature in the
hydrography of this parish is the great extent of ground covered
by reservoirs for the Supply of the mills at Eaglesham, Busby, Fenwick,
etc. Upwards of 237 acres are thus permanently inundated. There are no
less than three lochs at Picket Law; a fourth on the lands of Dunnan,
Greenfield, Braehead & Holehall; a fifth on the lands of Dunnan,
Blackwood, and Blackwood Hills; and a sixth at Binend. The
extent of ground covered by each is as follows:
------------------------------------------------Acres.--Roods.--Falls.
1. Picket Law and Kirkton Reservoirs 26--------3---------6
2. Dunnan. Greenfield. etc Reservoir 64--------1--------36
3. Dunwan. Blackwood, etc Reservoir 96--------0--------31
4. Binend Loch. 50--------0----------7
Total 237--------2----------0
These measurements do not contain the portion belonging to the
Marquis of Hastings.
The Torburn and Thriepland burn join at Millhouse dam, after which their
combined waters form the White Cart.
A little below Craigenfeich, at Allerton farm, limestone is seen in
the bed of the Cart. After disappearing for some time it appears again a
quarter of a mile above Nethercraig bridge. The whin comes in again
at Hole, and at the bridge on the road between Eaglesham and East
Kilbride. The Cheif messuage was the Castle of Punoon, or, as it is
sometimes written, Polnone or Polnoon, vulgarly pronounced Pownoon.
This barony seems all along to have remained in the quiet
possession of the Eglinton family. The Earls of Eglinton have Still |

The river White Cart takes its rise out of the moors of Eaglesham
and East Kilbride, and in its course northwards divides the Counties
of Lanark and Renfrew. The water of Earn, a tributary of the Cart,
flows on the northwest of the parish, which is also watered by several
Rivulets, and contains two small lakes, Binnend and Lochgoin,
the latter giving name to a farmstead where dwelt John Howie, |
