A finely situated little village Situated on the road leading from Glasgow to Pollokshaws about 2 miles from the City.
McDonald in his "Rambles round Glasgow" gives the following story respecting the derivation of the name - "The singular name of "Crossmyloof" is accounted for by a popular myth which is yet current in the surrounding County. It is said that, immediately before the battle of Langside, the forces of Queen Mary were drawn up on the site of the Village. A Council of war was meanwhile held at which it was debated whether they should, under the circumstances in which they were placed risk a collision with the troops of the Regent. The Queen always impetuous, was urgent that an attack should at once be made, from this rosolution several of her adherents attempted to dissuade her, Tired at lack of their importunities and eager to decide her fate, the Queen pulled an ebony crucifix from her breast, and laid it on her snowy palm, saying at the same time. As surely as that cross lies on my loof. I will this day fight the Regent" |

"In a direct South east line from this hill," (a hill near
Overlee) without any intervening eminence, and at the distance
of about two miles, there are still very distinct traces of a
Small Roman encampment at the summit of a hill,
the name of which, from the circumstances, is Camp Hill.
It must have been the station of some small divisions of
the Roman army placed there, at once to keep the natives
in check, and to perform the duty of sentinels". "The camp
is circular, with a diameter of about 100 yards. The vallum,
which is still very perfect, is 7 feet high on the outside,
and 4 feet wide on the top. There seems to have been three
entrances to the camp, nearly trisecting the encircling
the rampart, but of these the approach from the N.W. [north west] was the principal, leading
directly to the pretorium or generals tent, the position of which is still marked
by a slight elevation of the ground on which it was pitched. About 30 years ago,
a Roman Vase, of elegant form and exquisite workmanship, was found by the
late minister of the parish, in preparing for the foundation of an addition
to the house on his property at Woodend, and is now in the possession of the
Hunterian Museum of Glasgow. New Statistical Account. pages 502 & 3. |

The field on which the claim of Queen Mary to the Scottish Crown was decided on the 13th May 1568 A detailed account of which is given in Sir Walter Scott's Novel of the abbot According to the most popular account of it Quen Marys Troops were on their march from Hamilton to Dumbarton, And the Regent Murry learning that Circumstance, marched from Glasgow to meet her drawing up a detachment of his Horse about the place where the farm house of Pathhead now stands Interupting the further progress of the Queens troops. When the Battle ensued the result of which is well Known by all readers of Scottish history |

"To the S.W. [South.West.] of the eminence on which the remains of the Roman encampment are to be seen, and nearly on the ridge of the same long hill, whose other elevated extremity is crowned by Langside House, stands the village of Langside, rendered ever memorable in Scottish history, by the fatal day when the lovely but ill starred Mary appeared for the last time as a queen & a free woman. A sufficiently accurate detail, to which tradition can add nothing, of the battle fought on that eventful day, the 13th of May 1568, fraught with so many real blessings to Scotland:- yet even now contemplated with mixed feelings of pleasure & pain by every leal hearted Scotsman, is given by every writer of Scotch history, and the minute discrepancies which appear in their several naratives would not probably have existed, had they been better acquainted with the localities of the scene of action.

The vestige of an Ancient British Camp occupying the crown of a hill to the South east of the Village of Crossmyloof, The Vallum or wall is quite distinct in many places and sufficiently shews the original extent of the Camp, but as it is quite close to the hedge which surrounds the Camp it wont as much of shewing on the plan. "The bloody murderers of these men
Were Major Balfour and Captain Maitland
With them others were not frie
Caused them to search in Polmodie
As soon as they had them out found
They murthered them with shots of guns
Scarce time to them did they allow
Before their Maker their Knees to bow
Many like in this land have been
Whose blood for wingeance cries to Heaven
This Cruel wickedness yow see
Was done in loan of Polmadie
This shall a standing witness be

North west of Eaglesham, and upon

upon an eminence, stands the castle of Cathcart, the
principal messwage of a fair lordship of the same
denomination; whose ancestors (without doubt)
have taken surname & Designation from their hereditary

the reign of King William, and about the year 1179,
Rainaldus de Cathcart is witness to the Donation
