108 | The ruins of this old pile are situated in the east-end of the parish; and on the north bank of the River Earn. The settled tradition in the neighbourhood is, that, it was here where Sir William Wallace encountred the ghost of Fandon. The writer of the New Statistical Account of the Parish does not seem to place much confidence in this because "its appearance would not justify any such remote origin." What is here referred to, is supposed to be only a wing of the building, which is about 50ft. high, composed of unknown stone. Hence, one is led to believe that, it is of remote origin. The same writer goes on to say that, "The real Gascon Hall is said to have stood about a mile & a half east from this, amongst the present woods of Gask." Here again this statement is not in accordance with the fact of Sir William Wallace's immediately swimming the River Earn, after encountering the said ghost. |
