A fine stone Weir building across the River Almond situated about a mile north-west from Huntingtower Castle, that turns part of the River into an aqueduct which flows into the City of Perth. It is said to have been erected about the 12th Century by a frenchman of the name of Low's, from whom it derives the name. It is the property of the Borough of Perth and is in excellent repair. |

LOW'S WORK
The name given by the Town Clerk has been adopted, as it appears to be correct.
He states that in many old documents (such as those quoted above) Low's, is written
Lowis, as the Apostrophe was not then used to denote the possessive case. He further adds
that Low's Work is the mode adopted in all the town documents for the last 50 years.

This name applies to an Aqueduct, the water of which issuing from the River Almond at Low's Work, flows eastward into the City of Perth, where it drives several large mills, and others situated on its banks between the City and where it issues from the River. It is said to have been cut originally for the conveyance of water from the River into the moat or ditch that surrounded the City of Perth when it was fortified. It was ultimately deepened to obtain a greater flow of water, and was turned into a a small lead about the fifteenth century. It is the property of the Borough of Perth, and a committee of the town Council perambulates its banks every year to see that they are kept in proper order. It is partly rated in this parish. |

TOWN'S LEAD
The Town Clerk states that this Lead is as well known by one of the above
names as the other and probably better known in the Country places through
which it passes as Mill Lead. But as it is wholly the property of the City of
Perth and that it is already adopted Town's Lead on the 1/500 Plans of the
City it is considered advisable to retain the same name throughout its course. |

This name is applied to the chason between the two towers of Huntingtower Castle. "A daughter of the first Earl of Gowrie was courted by a young gentleman of inferior rank, whose pretensions were not countenanced by the family. When a visitor at the castle, he was always lodged in a seperate tower from the young lady. One night, however, before the doors were shut, she conveyed herself into her lovers apartment, and some prying duenna acquainted the Countess, who, cutting off all possibility of retreat, hastened to surprise them. The young lady's ears were quick; she heard the footsteps of the old Countess; ran to the top of the leads, and took the desparate leap of 9 feet over a chasm of 60 feet, and luckily lighting on the battlements of the other tower, crept into her own bed, where her astonished mother found her, and of course apoligized for her unjust suspicion. The fair daughter eloped the next night and was married. The place between the two towers is still familiarly known as The Maiden's Leap." (Extract from Stat. [Statistical] Account of Perthshire) |

The following is taken from New Statistical Accounts. "The parish seems once to have contained several wells of considerable note. One of the most celebrated of these was situated in the eastern part of the parish at a place called Hole of Ruthven. Its virtues were so famous that neither the authority of the magistrates, nor the admonitions of the clergy, although most rigourously applied, could deter the citizens from frequenting their efficacy. The name of the place still remains, but the well has long lost its existence." The name is now applied to an old one storey thatched house which was built on the site of the well. |

The date of erection of this castle is not known; but it is believed to have been built by one of the Earls of Gowrie as a hunting lodge about the begining of the 15th Century. It originally consisted of two square towers, but these have been connnected by buildings of a later date. The lower portion of it, is still inhabited, the upper flats not being fitted for habitation, they are turned into grainaries or stores for wheat etc. The towers are about 60 feet in height, slated, but are both in a ruinous condition. "It was here that James the sixth was for some time confined. In 1582, the King returning from a hunting party in Atholl, was invited to this castle, and detained by a party of Nobles; but he afterwards made his escape, and the persons engaged in the transaction were declared guilty of treason. This enterprise is usually called by historians, the Raid of Ruthven." (Extract from the "Beauties of Scotland") It is now the property of Major Mercer, Tullibelton House by Bankfoot. |

New Statistical Account. |
097 |
A well of beautiful water, situated about 100 yds. [yards] north of the Church, it appears to have been celebrated for its water, and is mentioned in the Statistical Account as such. The present minister is of opinion that the name of the Ph. [Parish] is derived from this, "Tobar Mor, ie, the great well" he also informs me that the ground around this well was known as the "Lady Park", but now disused and that there was another "Lady Well" close to the Church which was drained, when the building was enlarged, As the authority for these objects is so very meagre, I have omitted the last two on the tracings. i.e. the Park and the Site of the Well. |

Church
St Mary
Not considered advisable at Southampton to have this inserted on plan. T.L.
" St Serff's ,which was one of the three parishes that were united together at the
Reformation (and now forms the parish of Redgorton) was formerly the parish to which the
barony of Huntingtower belonged. Abbot Milne, in his history of the bishops of Dunkeld, gives a curious account
of the reason why that church was abandoned as the place of worship of the ancient family of Ruthven to whom the barony of Huntingtower belonged, and who had their residence in that ancient castle on the opposite side of the river Almond. He tells us "that a son of Lord Ruthven having come to this church to be baptized, was drowned in the River Almond in returning home, and that from that time the Church of St Mary's at Tippermuir, became the parish church of the whole lands on that side of the River"
