"The name of Rattray seems to have belonged alike to the parish, and to the principal family that dwelt in it, and probably was transferred from the one to the other. It is said that there are records which bear the name of Rattray of Craighall and Rattray, as early as 1066. No Account is given of the etymology of the name." New Stat [Statistical] Account.
"The Parish is in the extreme West of Strathmore proper, marching with the district of Stormont. It is bounded on the north by Alyth; on the north-east by the detached part of Blairgowrie; on the East by Bendochy; and on the South and West by the River Ericht, which divides it from the main body of Blairgowrie. Its extreme length from north to south is 5½ miles; and its mean breadth is about 1¾ miles. A detached portion called Easter Bleaton, lies 3½ miles to the north-north-west; measures 1 mile by 1½; and is bounded on the north by Forfarshire, - on the east and the south by Alyth, - and on the west by the river Lochy, which divides it from a detached part of Caputh and from Kirkmichael. Easter Bleaton forms part of the ascending ranges of the frontier Grampians. The main body of the parish, for 1¼ mile from the southern boundary,

"is flat, or very gently ascending; and over the rest of the area, consists of the lowest and slowly graduated heights which several miles beyond the northern boundary, attain a grampian elevation. The Ericht, over most of its 6½ miles connexion with the parish, is alternately a picturesque and a romantic stream, its banks (above Craighall) are sheer precipices of rock, upwards of 200 feet high - There is a thriving village in the parish ¾ of a mile east of Blairgowrie. It is, in a strict sense, two villages, Old and New Rattray, almost contiguous. Old Rattray is situated on the declivity of a hill, and built in a straggling manner; and New Rattray occupies both sides of the road toward Blairgowrie, and extends almost to the Ericht. The former has much increased during the last half century; the latter has entirely sprung into existence within that period; and both owe their prosperty, in a great degree, to the water power of the Ericht & the erection upon it of flax spinning Mills." Fullarton's Gazetteer
The antiquities of the parish several "Circles", "Standing Stones", the ancient mansion of Craighall, and the site of the ancient Castle of Rattray -
There is one portion of this parish detached, there is no portion of any parish contained within the boundary of this Parish - Blairgowrie detd. [detached] No. 2, common to the north-east of Rattray is drawn and completed on the Plans of Rattray Ph. [Parish] |

"Craighall is a very singular place. The house is seated on the top of a rock, about 214 ft. [feet] almost perpendicular above the Ericht. a balcony on the outside of the drawing room windows, secured by an iron railing, serves as a parade, whence the river and rocks, and surrounding scenery may be viewed. Craighall is accessible only in front which is from the south; and on each side of the entrance, a little in advance of the house, are 2 round buildings, evidently intended for protection, with some openings for Missile weapons, as if for the use of Archers. The old house of Craighall, the date of which is not known, was greatly altered about 5 years ago by the late Baron Clerk Rattray"
New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account]
The drawing room, with the balcony, is the northernmost wing of the building which appears to be the oldest part. The letter A on trace shews part of a circular Wall being the only remains left of one of the 2 round building, mentioned above. The letter B, marks the site of the 2nd. |

A considerable extent of high land the greater portion of it planted with fir wood, the remainder rough pasture & Furze; it was a commonty at one time but it is now divided, the principal proprietor being Robert Clerk Rattray Esqr. of Craighall.
"There is a commonty in the parish of nearly 300 acres, called the Broad Moss, which is become almost a waste for want of being divided. Though called a Moss, it is more properly a Muir."

A large stone similar to the ancient monumental standing stone, George Smith says that there were other two close to this one, but they were removed about 23 years ago.
"If large gray stones be entitled to the appellation of antiquities, or are any indication of the religious worship of our ancestors, a few of these appear in a field, thence called Standing Stanes, which are supposed to be the ruins of a Druidical temple."

[Notes below Standing Stone:]
The standing stone in front of the
house of the same name is the remains
of a Druidical Circle or Temple. The Revd. [Reverend] Mr.
Haldane says that 20 stones constituted
this circle & a large one stood in the centre,
he supposed the one now standing was the
centre one.
"Above the river, southeast from the village, in a beautiful
situation, is a Druidical temple, much defaced, and many
of the stones carried off. The farm upon which it has been
built is called Standing Stones."

On the eastern summit of this Hill [Castle Hill] are the remains of a large building once the residence of the family of Rattray, it is in two portions, the largest is surrounded by something like a terraced walk and is well defended by the abruptness of the hill.
"A large earthen mound rises in the low grounds, Called the Hill of Rattray, on the eastern summit of which are the remains of a large building, named the Castle of Rattray, and which was anciently the residence of the family of that name. The ground is of an oblong form, something resembling the shape of an inverted ship; but the eastern corner of it is circular, as if sucked up by the action of a whirlpool, when the waters were retiring from the Earth. In the perilous times which were so frequent during the reign of our Scottish Kings, the family of Rattray removed from this hill to Craighall, as a place of security against the sudden incursions of enemies."

[Additional quotations:]
"To the S.E. [South East] of the village there is a rising ground,
known by the name of Castle Hill, upon which the
vestiges of a very large building are to be seen, which
was called the Castle of Rattray and was the residence
of the family of Rattray, of great antiquity, according
to the account given of it in the Baronage of Scotland"
Old Stat. [Statistical] Account
"The greatest number of these tumuli are
circular heaps, resembling a flat cone.
A great many are oblong ridges, like
the hulk of a ship, with its bottom upwards."
Chalmers' Caledonia
"To this class* probably belongs a very large
earth-work, styled the Hill of Rattray, Perthshire"
Wilson's Annals of Scotland
*In my opinion this is not a "ship-barrow" nor Tumulus of any kind, but a natural hill.
