The principal of the landing places of the Priory of Inchmahome and of Talla, a seat of the Earls of Monteith, was naturally called by Eminence, Port, a word of the same meaning in Gaelic as in English; and when a church was built here, it gave its name to the parish. About half the parish is mountainous moor & level peat-moss; & the productive surface is farther diminished by lakes, the largest of which is in the centre of the parish. The mountainous tract is on the north, at the commencement of the Scottish Highlands, to which the transition from the lowlands is here abrupt." "New Stat [Statistical] Account." This parish is situated in the district of Monteith; bounded on the north by Loch Venachar, which divides it from Callander; on the north-east by the parishes of Callander [continued on page 2]

"The Priory of Inchmahome, the buildings are still so entire, that the uses to which each one of them respectively was applied may be guessed at. The rest of the arches had an aisle outside of which the ragling is discernible on the tower. The western entrance is entire; and some of the hewn stones of a window above are visible. The oriel window of the Choir is filled up with rubble work of modern date. The side walls of this portion of building are almost entire. South of the church, at the distance of a few yards, are the ruins of an edifice, consisting, on the ground floor, of the refectory, 19 paces by 11, and to which was an entrance from the dormitory on the north, another from the Kitchen on the south east angle, and a 3rd about the centre of the east wall, and descending by a few steps from the stairs leading to some more apartments above the Kitchen. OS1/25/69/44 [Page] 44 [Notes referring to the 'Priory'] "The ruins of a large monastery, which was once the seat of the Augustinian Monks. It was founded by King Egbert in 825" Black's Tourist Guide book "The largest of the islands, seems to have very anciently been a seat of the Culdees. This which in itself is highly presumeable, appears from what David Camerarins says of St. Berchan, that he was renowned in Stirlingshire in the 8th Century, and spent part of his youthful days in the Convent of St. Columba, not far from Stirling; an assertion applicable to Inchmahome" "The island of St. Columba, as Inch-ma-home is supposed to signify, constitutes the leading feature." New Stat [Statistical] Account The priory belonged to the Canons Regular of the Augustinian order, and was founded by Edgar, King of Scotland. Fullarton's Gazetteer "On the larger of its two islands are the ruins of the priory of Inchmahome, founded by Edgar, King of Scotland where the unfortunate Queen Mary passed her infancy." Anderson's Guide to the Highlands.
OS1/25/69/45 Priory continued [continued from page 44] these apartments the materials seem to have been used for the construction of the more modern of the edifices in the neighbourhood of Talla and of a Mausoleum in Inchmahome, which consisting partly of a Vault and an apartment above; and partly of an avenue, shut in by 2 walls, and at the west end by a gateway, and running obliquely from Northeast to Southwest, Surmounts part of the foundations of the church and dormitory. For the awkward position of this more recent structure no reason can be assigned, but a total absence of design. It seems to have been hurriedly got up to receive the remains of Lord Kilpont, who was killed by James Stewart of Ardvorlich in Montrose's Camp at Collace in 1644, and whose corpse was by Montrose dispatched to the deceased's father, William eight Earl of Monteith of the Grahams, then a state prisoner in Talla. The two walls and the gateway above mentioned were built in consequence of the testiment of Kilponts son, William the last of the Earls. Towards the centre of the choir and in a horizontal position, is a sepulchral monument, assignable to the end of the Thirteenth century, being that of Walter Stewart, Earl of Monteith, and his Countess in whose right he enjoyed the Earldom. The Church; of which the building was commenced in or soon after the year 1238 by Walter Cummin, Earl of Monteith, was probably by his immediate successor viz Walter Stewart, and received from either him, or his Countess this appropriate decoration. The Priory of Inchmahome was, from before September 1547 to the end of February following, the seat of the Scottish Court. Soon after the disastrous battle of Pinky, the Regent Arran, by advice of the Queen mother, the Earls of Angus, Argyle, Rothes Cassilis, and others at Stirling, suddenly conveyed the infant Queen Mary to Inchmahome, and commited her to the joint care of the Lords of Erskine And Livingstone." It is generally believed by the people in the neighbourhood that a battle had been fought here betwixt the early families of Monteith, and some of his neighbours. The names of some of the places is evidence of such, - Tamnafalloch - the Knoll of Blood. Rusky - The baring of the sword. Blairhoyle - The battle fought.

The North west and North sides and defended by a fosse. The other sides by a natural ravine. And the general appellation, in the country for these forts, is Keir, which is evidently a corruption of the British Caer, a fort". Such were some of the British forts, standing Southward of the Forth. There is also a range of the same kind of strengths along the face of the country, on the north side of the same river, which are equally known by the common name of Keir and which appear to have been the only Caledonian posts, which were designed by them to oppose the Roman progress, as indeed Tacitus intimates" - Chalmer's Caledonia p [page] 93.

The authorities believe it to have been constructed by the Romans, and that a road had led from it connecting it with other Camps in the adjoining parishes. No trace of a road can now be discovered on the ground. At the South east angle of the Camp is a small raised mound tabulated on the top and about 10ft. in diameter. "At the North west extremity of the Moss of Flanders is a Roman Castellum, about 50 paces in diameter and irregularly square. There seems to have been in this direction a Roman iter from the great Roman causeway which ran along Scotland from South to North, from the Wall of Antonine at Camelon, by Stirling, Dunblane &c to Brechin. This iter is supposed to have crossed the river Forth at the ford of Drip, and next to have crossed the Stream of Guidie, near where the Forth receives this minor and tributary body of water. Here as is supposed, the iter branched off towards Garfarran, another Roman Castellum, which is situated south of the Forth." in Drymen Parish New Stat. Acct.
