124 A small Lake partly on the lands of Letter and partly on Lennieston, near the west side of it is a Small island, and on the west end of it is a heap of stones grown over with nettles &c. Mr Weir Land steward of Rednock, and Robert Johnston of Cassafuir say that this is traditionally said to be the ruins of a house or Castle, which had belonged to Sir John Monteith, the betrayer of Wallace.
"South of Craig Dhereag about ½ a mile & in a moor considerably higher than the country south of it, is Loch Rusky, about a mile in circumference having a Small island, on which are the ruins of a house, traditionally assigned to that noted Sir John Monteith of Rusky, by whom the patriot Sir W.
