The following abridged extract from Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland Vol: [Volume] 2. p. [page] 514* is one of the most appropriate that may be given, at one time it was exclusively used for scotch convicts. at present it receives prisoners from England.
*"To this prison all criminals ordered to imprisonment for six months may be sentenced or removed. The Building is adapted to the seperate system of prison discipline, the cells are lighted with one gas light each. The prison is placed under the management of the board of directors of prisons in Scotland who have power to apportion the several counties and burghs the sums required for building and maintaining the prison" |
