[Statistical Account] McFarlane's Plan of Perth 1792 PeacocKs Hist. [History] of Perth 098 [Situation] On the South Side of Long Causeway The site of this monastery is pointed out on the south side of the Long causeway in Dovecot Land. In the garden ground attached to some of the houses at this place human bones are frequently dug up, which evidently points out the site of the grave yard, and there is here a small dwelling house which had been constructed, in the memory of some very aged persons, of a small ruin and which is traditonally stated to have been the ruins of the church of the monastery. The lower part of the walls of this house appears plainly to have been part a very old building as it's quite different to that of the upper or modern building, but whether it was part of the church cannot now with any degree of certainty be ascertained. The site also referenced on a plan of Perth dated 1792 near the place above referred to.

There are some remains of old walls or portion of a ruin with gothic arches which have much of the appearance of being a portion of some ecclesiastical building which many consider to be the Southern side of the Black Friars Monastery, and in a small courtyard

OS1/25/66/53A [Page] 53a Exam. [Examiners] Office 4th Dec. 1873 Sir With respect to the Newspaper paragraph signed W. B. I have to remark that the exact Site occupied by the buildings by the Church, Grave yard, and gardens, of this monastery can never be determined with Strict accuracy. I made all the research possible as you will see by the Descriptive Remarks in Name Book. I was aware of all that W. B. has stated as far as the "Remains" found are Concerned but I made much research than he appears to have made. I am still Convinced that the "Supposed Site", as written on our Plan is as nearly true as ever can be ascertained. [signed] James Carpenter Col. OS1/25/66/53B The Blackfriars Monastery. -- "X.Y.Z.," in your number of Monday the 10th, write that "the site of the great Blackfriars Monastery could only be vaguely and conjecturally fixed by the antiquarian member of the Ordnance Survey." Allow me to state that the Black- friars Monastery was situated at the corner of Kinnoull Street and Carpenter Street and part of the ruins could be seen before the building of Mr Lowe's Dancing Academy. When the drainage was being cut in that locality, the situation of the Blackfriars burying ground could be traced, confirming the site of the Monastery. The north boundary ran along the Dunkeld Road, com- mencing at the west of the centre entrance to Athole Crescent, but going not so far west as Mr Jamieson's works. The east boundary was to the west of No. 4 Athole Crescent, running S.S.E. [South South East], and finishing opposite No. 1 Union Street, taking in the west division of Carp- enter Street. The south and west boundaries could not be ascertained, as they are covered with houses; but Kinnoull Street was without the boundary. The well of the monastery is in the garden of No. 6 Athole Crescent; and in No. 7 can be seen a very fine old thorn; the only remaining tree which belonged to the monastery grounds. How the individual who took charge of the antiquarian part of the trigonometrical survey of Perth could have made such a glaring mistake as to put down on the Ordnance Survey map the monastery somewhere about or behind Athole Place, is a surprise to many, as he was often informed where it originally stood. Could he have confounded it with the site of the Castle of Perth, which stood on the west side of Curfew Lane, between the houses and Messrs Pullar's works,--part of the ruins remaining till within the last 20 years,--or was he misled by the modern name given to Blackfriars House?--W. B.
OS1/25/66/54 [Page] 54 and the site of it is marked on two plans of Perth one dated 1774 and the other 1792 nearly on the Same Spot. Others again contend that it stood adjoining the North Port and that of Blackfriars Wynd of which Mr. Marshall author of a history of Perth is of the latter opinion. The monastery with its Church and other adjuncts seems to be of considerable extent, and the most conclusive evidence appears to prove that it stood on the east and south west sides of Athole Crescent. " The Dominican or Blackfriars Monastery was situated at the north Side of the town and was founded by Alexander the second in 1231 who in 1244 granted to it the whole ground where his garden was and also a Conduit of water from his mill lade measuring four inches in width. The buildings were large and Commodious, and wer Sometime Spoken of as a palace. In this monastery the Scottish Kings when at Perth usually took up their residence after the demolition of the old Castle. In the Church of the monastery the parliament Sometimes met and the national ecclesiastical Councils held in it their annual meetings. The designation of the friars was, The Predicatory or the Preaching Friary of the Burgh of Perth." Peacock's Hist [History] of Perth Page 578.

OS1/25/66/55 [Page] 55 The Dominican or Black Friars' monastery. This the most ancientof the monasteries in Perth or its neighbourhood was founded by Alexander. II. King of Scotland, in 1231 to whom he granted the whole extensive garden grounds which was afterwards Known by the name of the King's garden and also the Gilten herbor as well as a Conduit of water from the mill-lade of four inches in diameter. The building stood on the north side of the town without the walls on that portion of ground now occupied as gardens behind the houses of Athole Place and the works of Perth New Gas Company. This district of the town is still called the Black Friars. It seems to have been a Stately and Convienient fabric and Contained besides the Cloisters in which the friars resided extensive and Commodius apartments, in which the Scottish Kings often lodged previous to the murder of the most accomplished and talented of our Sovereigns James I. Attached to the monastery was a church dedicated to the Virgin and to St. Dominic the founder of the order. In this church conventions of the nobility and clergy were often held several distinguished persons were also interred in it among these were Elizabeth Mure queen of Robert II. The earliest notice of the Castle in history which the writer of this has been able to trace is that of its partial demolition by a great flood in the river Tay which happened in 1210, the particulars of which are minutely recorded in Fordun's Scotichromcon. The King William the Lion and family resided here at the time and his infant son with the nurse and 14 others of the royal household lost their lives. The Site of this object is marked in the Street by a peculiar arrangement of the paving Stones By references to it at an early date in the City records it appears to be of very ancient date. It is probable that there was a Cross as early as the town became of sufficient importance as to have a market, and very likely the original Stone Cross which was used in primitive times was replaced in subsequent times by a fabric quite dissimilar to that of the primitive stone cross. It is noticed in the Session Record, of 1578 and ordered to be repaired. In 1652 it was demolished by Cromwell and the material used in building the Citadel. It was rebuilt in 1688. It was finally removed in 1765 by order of the town Council. It was twelve feet high and had a flight of steps within which led to a terrace or balcony above-

" In the traditional account of the Origin of Perth given by Mr. Henry Adamson in his Muses Florenodie it is said that Agricola having fortified the town with walls and a strong Castle did also with much Labour to his soldiers and probably to the poor natives also construct a wooden bridge over the river at Perth. This may be true, but he produces no fact to give probability to the tradition. Among the records belonging to the Abbacy of Scone There is an order from King Robert Bruce 1329 to the abbot and monks, to allow the magistrates of Perth liberty to take stones out the quarries of Kincarathie or Balcormac [Continued on next page]

OS1/25/66/102 [continued from previous page] for building the Bridge of Tay, the bridge of Earn and the church. A Citizen of Perth of the name Dundee has recorded several events with their dates in a miscellanious manuscript of which Mr. Adamson was in possion [possession] when he wrote the Muses Florenodie. The manuscript was commenced in 1570 and was continued by his son till 1636. It contains, inter alia, a notice of "the falling down of the three bowis of the Brig of Tay be the greet watter and of bowis vaitter on the 20th day of Dec. [December] in anno 1573".- "The downe falling of five bowis of the brig of Tay on the 14th day of Janewir in anno 1582 yearis."- The downe falling of the bra vein pillaris of the brig of Tay the 29 day of Dec. [December] in anno 1589 zeiris". This must have been the bridge that was built in 1329 and the substantial correctness of Mr. Dundee's notice is established by the contents of a decreet of the Lords of Council in 1586, in causa, the magistrates of Dundee versus the magistrates of Perth in which the latter plead, why they should not pay certain duties claimed for repairing the shore and bulwark of Dundee that their need was equally great of sia exactions to support the Common weil of their burgh mair requisit to be bott and helpit nor the said shore and having of Dundee Speciallie the brig haiffing twyst fallin down and decayit, and laitlie being erect of Tymmer is readdy to fall without present help," etc. From this time till 1617 the bridge was under repair and a considerable portion of it built anew. Among the records of the house of Pittheavil there is an order from the King and Secret Council 7th Feb. [February] 1599 for allowing the magistrates of Perth to take stones out of the quarry of Pittheaviless for repairing the bridge of Tay on payment of 50 merks, [continued on next page]
OS1/25/66/103 [continued from previous page] untill it be finished. The progress of the work, the obstructions which occured and the means resorted to for obtaining the necessary funds are entered faithfully in the City Records. In 1617 it appears to have been finished as in that year 3000 merks were paid as the price of the last arch."

This is a circular stone set in the middle of the High St.[Street] opposite the National Bank and somewhat resembles a mill stone having a large hole in its centre. Tradition states that here a pillory stood, where offenders were punished in public for petty offences. It was a mode of punishment similar to the Tongs which were attached to the Market Cross, some old people also assert that the punishment of the stocks were inflicted here. A short distance E.[East] of the above stone is a statue of Sir Walter Scott erected on a neat pedestal and surrounded by an iron railing, the statue is of Stone and about one third above life size.

The belief of this rests on the authority of Geoffrey who wrote his history in the beginning of the twelfth century, and in the reign of Henry I. In connection with this tradition it may not be out of place to state that the workmen when they had about three feet below the level of the Street to find a proper foundation for the present building discovered two parallel arches. Under each of these they found an apartment 26 feet long and 14 broad. The walls were 3½ feet thick and strongly cemented. In the one there was a door to the South and in the other one to the North. In digging sometime since in the grounds of Mudhall about 14 miles from Perth in the parish of Bendochy, Several similar subterraneous buildings were discovered which when cleared of the ashes and earth with which they were filled were found to be about 40 feet long and 6 feet wide and 5 feet deep. Such buildings answer to the descriptions which Tacitus gives of those of the Germas De Mar. German. C. [Circa] 16 See Dr. Easton's Stat. Acct.[Statistical Account] of Kirriemuir p.177 for similar appearances in that parish."

The large hall is spacious and elegant capable of accomodating more than 2,000 at promiscuous meeting or 1800 persons with sittings and moveable seats are provided for the number. Besides a spacious lobby with a commodius gallery above there are two long antechambers and a retiring room with a grand lantern light at top. The large hall is also lighted from above. OS1/25/66/151 [Page] 151 The most interesting edifice in Perth as a memorial of the olden times and from which the Fair city derived its name of St. Johnstown, is the Gothic Church dedicated to St. John the Baptist the tutelary Saint of the Citizens. This venerable Structure is in the very centre of the City and its square tower anciently much higher than as it now appears is conspicuous in all directions. The interior has been long disfigured by the subdivision into three pa- -rish churches of the presbyterian establishment but the Church in its original state when served by the vicar of Perth was a long edifice extending much farther westward. It is traditionally said that the Picts after they embraced Christianity dedicated the Church and bridge of Perth to St. John the Baptist. From this circumstance the town was popularly designated St. Johnstown and it is often mentioned as such by old historians and in ballads though it is not so recognised in any public documents The burgh Seal used from the year 1400 to the Reformation many impressions of which are appended to the charters of the former Religious Houses represents on one side the decapitation of the Baptist. Salome holding a platter to receive the head, on the obverse the Baptist appears as enshrined and supported on each by two figures pro- -bably designed to indicate priests with this Legend on both sides. " S: Conimunitatis ville Santi Johannis Baptiste de Perth", Whatever credibility may be attached to the alleged Pictish selection of the Baptist as the tutelary Saint of the "Fair City," the founder of the original or of the present Church of St. John and the date are unKnown. An edifice appears to have existed before the tenth Century and the Church so called in the [continued on page 152]
OS1/25/66/152 Page] 152 [continued from page 151] beginning of the thirteenth century was large and of considerable architectural pretention. In 1226 St. Johns Church was granted to the monks of Dunfermline in the reign of Alex- -ander II. and during a century afterwards it was allowed to become ruinous. King Robert the Bruce in a charter dated at Glasgowin 1329 granted to the Abbey and Convent of Scone a supply of stones from two specified localities for the con- -structions of the Church and bridge of Perth but the repair was partially effected and it was neglected after his decease. It is stated that Edward III of England Killed his brother John Earl of Cornwall with his own hand before the high Altar in St. John's Church in 1336 for ravaging various districts of Scotland, yet the English historians are Silent on this important event and merely record that the Prince died in October that year at Perth where though then young he had been left with the Command by the English monarch. St. Johns Church as it existed at the Commencement of the fifteenth Century was in Complete repair. The Choir or east end had been rebuilt the former altars with the exception of the great Altar of St. John the Baptist had been removed but several additional ones were founded as is intimated in the Subsequent list. The edifice as it now appears is of various dates and has undergone numerous internal and external alterations. The [?] is much by the mode in which it is arranged the partition walls Completely destroyed the architectural effect," etc. etc. Book of Perth pages 57. & 5[8]

It was origionally called the KirK of the Holy Cross of St. John the Baptist. As early as the dawn of Scottish history, or as tradition states as early as the beginning of the fifth century there was a Church here of this name but it is the opinion of some Archaeologists that the present fabric does not date older than the latter part of the 14th or early part of the 15th century but there is good reason to believe that part of the present is the work of the 12th or 13th century before the Reformation it was occupied as one church but it is now divided into 3 separate churches by means of portion walls. It stood on the SE [South East] quarter of the town Close to the river Tay: and in 1580 the grounds belonging to the convent were set apart as the Common Cemetery for the Citizens and such as resided in the parish of Perth."
