for various purposes and in particular he directed them to invest a considerable portion of his fortune in such heritable or personal securities as they might deem proper to accumulate for a number of years, and thereafter to lay out and employ the whole sum princpal and in the purchase of ground for and the building and erecting in the City of Perth or its neighbourhood of an Asylum for the reception of lunatic persons, &c. &c.
The erection was commenced on the 18th. October 1822. It was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1827 under the title of "James Murray's Royal Lunatic Asylum", and its management vested permanently in twenty-five Directors - viz. nine ex officio four for life and twelve elected annually. It was first opened on the 28th. June 1827. The original Cost was upwards of £40,000 including the house and grounds and lately the Directors have purchased a farm adjoining at an expense of nearly £7,000 besides the mansion and grounds Pitcullen Bank also contiguous
