097; 098 | [Situation] On the western bank of the river Tay. In the parish of Perth. A royal burgh the capital of Perthshire, situated on the west bank of the Tay in the central portion of a low lying plain of fertile or alluvial ground. The town is very ancient and tradition which is recorded by the earliest historians of Scotland says that it was founded by the Roman under Agricola and antiquaries are generally of opinion that it is the same town which on Plotomeys map of the Britain is called Victoria, and there are many circumstances which would lead to this conclusion. The old part of the present town which will be seen by the "Site and remains of the City Walls" now shewn on the Ordnance plans was the shape of a Roman Camp, and Roman coins have been sometimes found in the [continued on page 6] |
