The parish of Muthill is in the Presbytery of Auchterarder, Synod of Perth and Stirling. Patron the Crown. Stipend £243.17.5 glebe £30.0.0.
The parish of Muthill lies a little to the south of the centre of the southern half of Perthshire; it is bounded on the south by the parishes of Dunblaneand Ardoch; on the east, by Blackford, Trinity Gask, and a detached part of Monzie; on the north, by Crieff, and Monzievaird and Strowan parishes; And on the West by the Parish of Comrie and two detached portions Nos. 3 & 4 of Monzievaird and Strowan Ph. [Parish] Along the sides of the Earn and the Allan, the haughs are for the most part a light loam, on beds of sand and gravel, which, with an admixture of lime and marl, produce very luxuriant crops. Almost to the hill top, from the banks of the rivers, the ground is found to be made productive by cleaning, by draining, and by manuring;and so every year, wee see a little field made out, farther up the hill. The low grounds especially are very productive when limed, and drained, and manured.
The parish contains 22095 acres - Statute Acres by admeasurement from the plans, There are no detached portions of this parish nor are there any detached portions of any other parish situated within it. |

This is a large boulder, on the margin of the road, leading from Comrie to Ardoch, which is said to mark the resting place of heroes slain at the battle between the Romans and Caledonians. Its proximity to the Roman Camp, would support such a supposition. |

This well is lost sight of.
"In the same district is St. Patrick's Well, so named from a chapel once there, probably dedicated to that saint." Statistical Account
The water, for making way for improvements, has been drained from this well, but the place is still pointed out and easily identified as an old well. |

We know not what connection St. Patrick had with the sequestered spot, but it is certain, that the inhabitants, until very lately, held his memory in so high veneration, that on his day neither the clap of the mill was heard, nor the plough seen to move on the furrow" Statistical Acct [Account]

A large boulder of a globular shape, eight feet in diameter, and lying on the ground in such a way that a man, by exerting all his strength, is capable of giving it a very slight motion, Form the name a person would be led to suppose it an antiquity, but it is not. The people of the neighbourhood believe that it rolled, by a natural cause, from a high ridge of ground immediately above it, and through time the surface became worn round it which admits of its being so easily moved. |

A narrow old fashioned stone bridge of four arches spanning the River Earn on the T.P. [Turnpike] road leading from Crieff to Stirling, it is kept in repair by the County.
"The Rivers are all furnished with stone bridges, generally built by the voluntary contributions of the country. That of Crieff was the second ever known over the Earn. It consists of four large arches; and was built out of the vacant stipend of the parish, in the interval between the suppression of Episcopacy in 1690, and the re-admission of a Presbyterian minister in 1699." One of the arches - the farthest south - was broken down by the Highlanders in the year 1715, to arrest the progress of the Royalist forces. It was afterwards rebuilt, but the frame that was used, must have been one which had been employed in constructing some of the bridge, - for the new arch is somewhat higher, and not quite in keeping with the remaining arches of the Crieff Bridge." A large artificial sheet of water in Drummond Park
"Formerly the only lake in the parish was the Loch of Balloch, a natural collection of water at the foot of Torlum, not remarkable for beauty or expansion. But now we have several artificial lakes, one of which is worthy of notice. It is commonly styles the Pond of Drummond. This is an interesting sheet of water, and cannot but be admired by the visitor, On its north side, is a rocky eminence, about seventy feet above its level; around it are well wooded banks; and on it, swans, geese, and ducks are at all times seen. Its length is nearly a mile, and its breadth above half the same. Where the loch is now, there was once a cultivated valley, which was portioned out by the King's Commissioners on the forfeited estates, as a reward to some of the bravest men who hazarded their lives in the Rebellion of 1745; and after all of them had died out, or were removed; Lady Perth desired it to be formed into its present state." New Statistical Account
Near a mile to the east is the fish pond, a large sheet of water forming an agreeable feature in the landscape. At the termination of the last struggle for the Stuarts, - In which cause James, Duke of Perth acted a conspicuous part - Government erected on the spot now covered by this lake a kind of fortified village, which was occupied for some time after the Royal troops as a post of observation, this being the centre of Strathearn, and the principal pass, or key to the N. [North] Highlands. Not a vestige now remains of this once formidable military encampment." Fullarton's Gazetteer |

The ruins of an old chapel situated at the Strageath Mill, the east gable and part of the sides are still standing the graveyard in which it stands is occasionally used for the internment of a few old families.
The date of the erection of this Chapel is unknown, but it is said that Strageath was once a parish, and that at that time it was then the Parish Church, this statement, however is merely tradition as there are no documents to support this statement.
A gravestone within the walls of the Chapel bears the date 1692, there are much older looking ones in the graveyard but the dates on them are illegible. |

This name is applied to a small eminence a short distance east of Drummond Castle.
"It is worthy of notice, that, close by Drummond Castle, there is a small rock, called Eagle's Craig, and, by the country people, Beacon Hill, from whence a fire in the night might be seen, at the distance of 40 or 50 miles to the westward. The top of it is flat, and covered with ashes to a considerable depth. It is within two miles of Strageath, and may be seen from Camp's Castle, and from almost every part of a Roman road or causeway running from Strageath for miles together, eastward, in a straight line, to the parks of Gask, where there are still the remains of a Roman station. From which it is evident that the rock has been a place of signals, and hence derived its name." Old Statistical Account
Eagle's Craig is the name by which the object has been known for a long series of years. Beacon Hill is known by no one. |

Few families can trace a longer line of descent, or boast of nobler alliance, than the house of Drummond. Its founder was Maurice a Hungarian nobleman, who was one of the attendants of Edgar Atheling, Prince of England, and his sisters Margaret Christian, when, in 1068, they took refuge in Scotland, to avoid the insidious designs of William the Conqueror, and who, upon Margaret's devotion to the Scottish throne, was, for his eminent service to the Royal fugitives, rewarded with a grant of lands, and distinguished by the name of Drummond. After a continued succession in the male line from Maurice the founder, through twenty-five generations, the estate of Perth and representation of the house of Drummond devolved upon the Honourable Clementina Sarah Drummond, the only survivor of her father, James Lord Perth. In 1807, this lady was married to the Honourable Peter Robert Burrell, eldest son of Lord Gwydir, who succeeded his father as Baron Gwydir, 1820, and his mother as mother as Baron Willoughby de Eresby, 1828, and thus the estate of Perth and the representation of the house of Drummond, belong now to the Right Honourable Lord and Lady Willoughby de Eresby, who with their family, are not distinguished by their rank, than by their kindness and liberality to all around them. Their residence is Drummond Castle, when in this county, which merits some attention. It stands at the foot of Torlum, in the western part of part of the vale of Strathearn, and has a site of considerable elevation, rising gradually from the public road. It was built in 1490 by John first Lord Drummond, one every way distinguished both for his virtues and his illustrious deeds. Some writings of his, which reflect honour upon him, may be found in the genealogical account already referred to.
The building now exhibits all the appearance of having suffered from the hand of time and from violence. Tradition says, that it was beseiged, taken and garrisoned by Cromwell's army; and that at the Revolution of 1689, it ... |

... was demolished with the exception of some fragments, which are still standing. The south wing was fitted up for a library by the late Lord Perth, but is now an armoury. Respect is paid by the present family to the abode of their ancestors, for some repairs were made last summer upon the old walls, to preserve their ruins from further destruction." New Statistical Account
"The building most worthy of notice is the old Castle of Drummond, the ancient seat of the noble family of Perth. It stands upon a rock, about a mile to the westward of the military road, and was built in the year 1490. It was unroofed and partly demolished in 1689; yet the walls in some places were so strong and entire, that a part of them have been lately repaired, and fitted up for a library by the present proprietor. "The house, in which the family have resided for a century bygone, and in which it now resides, is on the same rock with the Castle, a little to the eastward. It is a plain building, that had originally been intended as only a temporary lodging, but is now enlarges, and made very convenient, and although an old house modernized (like many other seats in the parish), yet its pleasant situation, and its beautiful and unbounded prospect to the eastward, attract the notice and the admiration of every stranger." Old Statistical Account
"The modern castle is a little east from the old, on the same rock, and forms two sides of a square, and although not, at all, such a mansion as the family would have, were they residing constantly in the place, it is, however, comfortable as a summer residence during their visit, and is often the abode of the first nobility of the land." New Statistical Account
Immediately at the south of the Castle is an extensive and very beautiful flower garden, laid out in the Dutch taste, it contains, also, a number statues of very eminent persons, fountains, and a sun dial of very curious construction. The descent to the gardens from the castle is very abrupt, and is accomplished by several series of stone steps. |

"The church is an old fabric, that has srood for some centuries, and has often been repaired. It is said to have been built by Ochiltree Bishop of Dumblane, before the Reformation. The precise year is not known. It has however all the marks of antiquity: The roof is supported by a double row of pillars, with aisles on each side; and there is a sqare steeple at the west end; directly opposite to which, there is in the east end a quire which is a narrow building, with a large Gothic window. Near to it, are still to be seen the vestiges of three steps up to the altar." Old Stat [Statistical] Account
"The parish church is of a recent date. The old building was condemned in 1825, having stood four centuries. Spottiswood
says, that "Bishop Ochiltree succeeded, a wealthy prelate, and well esteemed ; and so purchased to his see a great part of the
forfeited lands of Stratheam, adorned the cathedral of Dunblane, built the bridge of Knaik and Machant, with the church of
Muthill; and did in his time divers other good works.'' The ruins of this ancient fabric serve to suggest the thoughts of other days, and other men, who, although dead, yet live in dear recollection.
New Statistical Account
It consisted of nave with aisles, and a choir, in the Gothic style. The walls are all level with the surface except those of the nave, which are in good state of preservation. A square steeple rises at the west end , about sixty feet in height, and roofed. |

The site of a Roman Camp, the whole of which is destroyed but the debris is still visible amongst the soil, the exterior line of entrenchment has been pointed out by some old persons who remember when it was in an entire state.

... the Romans had made, or intended to make, an addition or procestrium, westward, and divided again into two parts. From the abrupt manner in which the last works are broken off, there is reason to conclude that they had never been fully executed. The Roman Road from Ardoch crosses the Earn at a short distance above the station, and a branch leads into it. The situation is excellent, and there are strong reasons for supposing that, in the vicinity, a division of the army of Agricola pitched in a temporary, the entrenchments of which have been ploughed down. They existed in 1757 for Maitland says - "The Roman road intersects the camp at Stageath", which must refer to the entrenchments of a temporary camp not now to be seen. (Hist [History] Scot. [Scotland] vol.1 p.196). Several horseshoes were found near Strageath Camp. It was said that, about 80 years ago, the then farmer of Strageath discovered an urn, filled with treasure." Shearer's Antiquities of Strathearn
"There are two Roman camps in the parish; one at Strageath, and another at Ardoch; besides several fort s of observation. The camp at Strageath is situated on the banks of the Ern, near Innerpefray. Its dimensions cannot now be ascertained with any degree of exactness, the lines and ditches being completely levelled, except in a few places. But from what remains, it seems to have strongly fortified. From its size too, it appears to have been only a temporary station for a small army." Old Statistical Account
"The other camp or station of the Romans was at Strageath, upon the banks of the Earn, near to Innerpeffray . Its original work appears to have been of small dimensions, and the intended additions to it, seem never to have been fully executed. All its entrenchments are now levelled by the plough." 107 ; 117 |
The site of a Roman Road extending from the Camps of Ardoch to Perth. Nearly all the road in Muthill parish has been defaced, but it can be traced in most places with tolerable accuracy, the debris not having yet thoroughly incorporated itself with the soil. The portion through Pirnhill Plantation is nearly entire unless where a few of the stones were removed when the plan was planted.
"The Roman Road from Ardoch crosses the Earn at a short distance above the station (Strageath), and a branch leads into it." Shearer's Antiquities of Strathearn
The Roman Road on the north and west of the camp at Strageath differs materially from the survey given by General Roy, the tenant of the farm on which this portion of the road occurs has pointed out its site, states that he is positive of it, and further, that it was under his tenancy that the road was destroyed, and the stones removed to drain the fields through which it passed. As no other authentic information can be obtained, this portion of the Roman Road has been inserted on the tracings on this man's authority. |

107 |
A large upright stone about 1 feet in height, situated near the farmsteading of Dalchirla.
From enquiries made I find that popular tradition associates the stone, together with others situated easterly, with the Druidical Era. I have also been informed that it has been the subject of discussion among the intelligent, and the lovers of antiquity, in the locality, as to what era it should be associated with, the majority however have given it favor of the Druidical.
It will no doubt appear somewhat strange, that all the Standing Stones in the adjacent Sheet (106) are ascribed to the Romans, while those in Sheet 107 are said to be of Druidical origin. This apparent incongruity is only explained from the circumstance of their being both history and tradition to support the fact of a battle having been fought in the district where the so called Roman Stones exist, between the Romans and Caledonians, while there is nothing to shew that any engagement ever took place between these armies where the Druidical Remains are pointed out; Be this as it may, it is certain that all the Standing Stones between Dunniehan farmsteading, and the River Earn are locally and traditionally said to be Druidical, and there is no other course to follow than to shew them as such on the plans; |

The site of this remarkable well is still visible, about 30 yards North west of the site of the old chapel some time ago a drain was dug from it and a new well or drinking trough formed situated between the old well, and site of Chapel
"A third well upon the side of the Machony was of still greater importance. It was called the well of Struthill, and by the credulous was much sought after, as its virtues were considered effectual in curing madness. Doubtless, its celebrity was altogether owing to the artifices of the avaricious religionists, who, it would appear, practised on the superstition of frequent visitors, to call forth their liberality in the shape of offerings cast into the well. That this account is more than mere conjecture, appears from the fact, that the Papish chapel which stood near the well was ordered by the presbytery of Auchterarder, anno 1650, to be demolished, on account of the superstitions which were practised within it. But even this was not effectual to do away with the celebrity of the well, or rather, we may say, was not effectual to lessen the avarice of those who kept it; for in 1668 several persons testified before the presbytery of Stirling, that, having carried a woman thither, "They had stayed two nights at a house hard by the well; that the first night they did bind her twice to a stone at the well, but she came into the house to them being loosed without any help: The second night they bound her over again to the same stone; and she returned loose. And they declare also that she was very mad before that they took her to the well, but since that time, she is working and sober in her wits". This well was still celebrated, and votive offerings were cast into it, in the year 1723; but such delusions have now happily passed away"

The site of an ancient cairn, not a vestige of which remains at present it was removed to build dykes &c. Tradition says that this cairn was raised over the grave of a man of the name Murray. It would appear that a feud existed between Murray and John the Bangster who resided in his house not far distant. From his residence Bangster is said to have shot Murray with an arrow and that he (Murray) was buried there where the cairn was, from which circumstance the name is derived. |

This name is applied to a small oblong elevation said to have been the resting place of those who fell in a clan battle said to have been fought between the Murrays and Drummonds in the year 1490, the elevation is composed of loose stones and is now planted with beech, at present it is only about two feet higher than the general -- , as large quantities of the stones have been been removed from time to time to enclose the surrounding farms.
"The battle of Knock Mary, Better known by the name of battle of Rottenreoch, was fought about the year 1490, between the Drummonds and Murray's. George Murray, Abbot of Inchaffray, had enjoined his friends to estimate the teinds of the Drummonds' lands, in the parish of Monievaird, of which he had titular. This injunction they executed with vigour; and, with threatening words, had actually, and in a forcible manner, levied teinds upon the lands. In the absence of Lord Drummond, his son William, provoked by the outrage, went with a party to repel the Abbot and his friends from the said lands; but the Murrays hearing of the advance of the [---] of Drummond with a party to drive them off by force, marched up to the east side of Knock Mary [---] would have the advantage of the rising ground , and awaited the arrival of the Master of Drummond who was not to be discouraged by the advantage, but marched forward to the attack. The battle began with determination on both sides. From the advantageous position of the ground occupied by the Murrays ... onset, the Drummonds were like to give way, until they were reinforced by a party of Macrobies, the [---] Ballosh, who came up, partly from curiosity, and took up their station on a conspicuous plan [---] Mary, where they might behold the action. Seeing the Master of Drummond like to be [---] boldly advanced to his assistance. In the mean time, the Murrays seeing the bold act, [---] |

Parish of Muthill
"Passing along the military road to Ardoch, and near Mill of Steps, there are still to be seen the foundations of a blacksmith's house, who lived seventy years ago, and who had a beautiful daughter. This young woman could not endure the frowns of her stepmother, and with others embarked for America. On her way thither the ship was captured and carried into Morocco. And the tradition bears that the blacksmith's daughter became the Empress of Morocco! An old farmer, who died about eighteen months ago told this tale to the writer, and said that he remembered her well, and that she often wrote to her friends at Mill of Steps. It is farther related that she left two sons, who, about forty years ago, are said to have applied to the government of this country for aid to place them upon the throne of their deceased father, against an usurping kinsman, on the plea that they were of British descent. But the two young men are said to have been entrapped and cut off by some ambitious relative." New Statistical Account
