This parish is in the centre of Strathmore, on the eastern verge of Perthshire, bounded on the north, east, and south-east, by the parishes of Airlie, Eassie & Nevay, and Newtyle in Forfarshire; on the North-west by the parish of Alyth and on the west by the parish of Coupar Angus in Perthshire. It probably derived its name from its local situation, - the Church and Manse being built on a plain between two marshes or "gills" which might thus have given use to the word Midgile or Meigle. It is well supplied with water, the Dean Water maintaining the sluggish character which pervades its whole course, creeps 3½ miles along the north-west boundary. The River Isla sweeping away the Dean inundating its banks with the freshets which it brings down from the Grampians continues the boundary line for about 2 miles & Meigle Burn coming in from Newtyle, waters

the south-western and larger district & augments the Dean a mile above that streams influx to the Isla. The principal Mansion houses are Drumkilbo, Cardean, Belmont Castle and Meigle House - The Main line of the Scottish North Eastern Railway to Aberdeen skirts the eastern extremity of the parish, and a branch line from Meigle Junction to Alyth runs through the centre of the parish.
The only village in the parish is Meigle, it is pleasantly situated on its cognominal rivulet in the Centre of the parish, at the intersection of two turnpike roads. The nearest market-town is Coupar Angus, 5 miles distant, but Dundee (13 miles) is the principal market-town & port for shipping of grain. It has a post office & is supplied with Gas.
The only antiquities in the parish are the celebrated sepulchral stones of Vanora's Tomb in the churchyard of Meigle (64.4) a Tumulus called Belliduff in the grounds of Bellmont, a Standing Stone named Macbeth's Stone (64.4) and the site of an ancient Chapel (64.3) now occupied by a Mausoleum.
There is no portion of this parish detached, nor is there any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this parish. |

Mr. Anderson Ph. [Parish] School Master says that the tradition of the locality is, that they are the remains of the Sepulchral Monument of Vanora, wife of Arthur who flourished in the 6th century.
"In the church yard Meigle are the remains of the grand sepulchral Monument of Vanora, also called Vanera, Wanor & Guinevar: the British Helena, as her name according to Prudeaux imports. This princess was the wife of Arthur who flourished in the 6th Century, & whose history is involved in fables. In a battle between the Army of that Monarch & the United forces of Scots & Picts, Vanora was taken prisoner & carried with other spoils into Angus, where she lived in miserable captivity on Barry-hill as a punishment of her enormous crimes, it is added, she was torn in pieces by wild beasts; her body was buried at Meigle & a Monument erected to perpetuate her infamy. Whether this detail be genuine, or has arisen from the symbolic characters on the stones, it is impossible to determine. That Monument seems to have been composed of Many stones artifully joined, & decorated with a variety of hieraglyphical or symbolical characters, most of which are of the Monstrous Kind, & represents acts of Violence on the person of a Woman." Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]
"With respect to the celebrated sepulchral stones at Meigle, which connects them with the Vanora of tradition, is certainly more than doubtful. A more satisfactory account of them has been suggested by Captn. [Captain] Mitchell who considers them

them as neither more or less than the monuments of the Knights Templars, who unquestionably had a burying ground at Meigle. At the top of the south face of the largest stone, the armorial bearings of the Kingdom of Jerusalem may be distinctly traced, and the group of figures now almost obliterated, which has been supposed to represent Vanora torn in pieces by wild beasts (& on which the popular tradition was very probably founded) may be considered with great probability, as an allegorical representation of Judea rescued by the Crusaders.""

A large standing stone situated at the east end of the Western approach that leads to Belmont Castle. Mr. Anderson says that the tradition in the locality is, that a hero Slain by Macbeth was buried here, and that the Stone had been set upon his grave as a Momento.
"There are many remains of Antiquity in this parish and neighbourhood. In the inclosures of Belmont there is a tumulus called Belliduff which tradition will have to be the spot where Macbeth fought and fell; and at some distance a Stone of granite 20 tons in weight stands almost erect, to commemorate, it is said, the death of one of his generals: But that tyrant, it is more probable was slain at Lumphanan, a village in the Mearns. Old Stat Acct. [Statistical Account].
Pennant's Tour, after the mention of the Sepulchral says that, "In a field on the other side of the house, is another Monument to a hero of that day to the memory of the brave young seward who fell slain on the spot by Macbeth a stupendous stone marks the place 12 feet above ground and 18½ft. [feet] in girth, near the great stone is a tumulus called Duff's Knowe (of which see Belliduff) where the other commander is supposed to have fallen." |
