"The parish church is situated near the south bank of the Tay, nearly opposite to Dunkeld, and was built in 1798. It is commodious and comfortable. The situation is fine. It is nearly surrounded by trees; and for its neat and simple appearance, may be considered a model for Scottish country churches. In respect to the population, however, the site is not the most eligible. Though seated for upwards of 800 there is not half of that number within three miles of it."

A stone bridge of seven arches spanning the River Tay at Dunkeld property of the Duke of Atholl, there is a toll bar at its south end at which pontage is levied on all crossing.
"In 1805 the building of Dunkeld Bridge was commenced. It was opened in 1808. For ages previous to that time, there was no communication but by ferry-boats. It is a singularly elegant structure, on which no expense has been spared to unite taste and magnificence with convenience. This place and the country in general are indebted for it, principally to the spirit and liberality of John fourth duke of Athole. The total expense was about £35,000, but of which the Government advanced £5000. The tolls granted for the remainder yield but a small interest on the sums advanced by the Athole family. The length of the bridge is 485 feet, its breadth 27, and its greatest height from the foundation 54. There are five principal and two land arches, the span of the central one being 90 feet, and the others, in succession 85, 75 and 26."

"Birnham, a mountain in the parishes of Auchtergaven and Little Dunkeld, Perthshire. It rises from the right bank of the Tay, at the entrance to the Highlands, and attains a height of 1580 feet above sea level. Its summits command an extreme view of Strathmore, Stormont, Athole and Strathbraan. Its sides and skirts were anciently covered with forest, but are now marked only by the scaurs of slate quarries and the feathery growth of young larch plantations. An ancient vitrified fort of 320 paces in circumference was recently discovered on one of its summits. But the great interest of Birnam consists in its association with the story of Macbeth, as immortalised by Shakspeare; and this is well told as follows in the 'Beauties of Scotland':- When Malcolm Canmore came into Scotland, supported by English auxiliaries, to recover his dominions from Macbeth the Giant, as the country people called him, he marched first onward to Dunkeld, in order to meet with those friends who had promised to join him from the north. This led him to Birnam wood, where accidentally they were induced, either by way of distinction, or from some other motive to ornament their bonnets, or to carry about them in their hands the branches of trees. The people in the neighbourhood stated, as the tradition of the country, that they were distinguished in this situation by the spy whom Macbeth had stationed to watch their motions. He then began to despair, in consequence of the witches' predictions, who had warned him to beware 'when Birnam wood should come to Dunsinnan'; and when Malcolm prepared to attack the castle, where it was principally defended by the outer rocks, he immediately deserted it; and flying ran opposite hill, pursued by Macduff, but finding it impossible to escape he threw himself from the top of the hill, was killed upon the rocks, and buried at the Lang Man's Grave, as it is called, which is still extant." A plain substantial building in the village of Birnam, and erected upon a small mound named Lady Hill, much altered from its former appearance also upon this mound and on the spot where this Church now stands, was a cross at which the people , on a pilgrimage to Dunkeld Cathedral Commenced their Devotions. In 1860, the Church was built & Consecrated in the same year.v Seated to accommodate 250 persons.
"On the plain below Torwood Villa, a handsome Ecclesiastical Building in connection with the Scottish Episcopal Church, is being erected. The style is Early Middle Pointed, with severe geometrical tracery, in which a copious use of the unfoliated circle in the east and side windows, &c. The whole design harmonizes well with the surpassing scenery in which it stands. This building is on the site of one of the crosses erected in Roman Catholic times. These crosses were put up on the various roads at those places where the first view of the Cathedral was obtained."

A district extending from Strath Bean along the south bank of the River Tay to the south-east boundary of Little Dunkeld parish, property of Sir William D Stewart Bart. [Baronet] Murthly Castle.
"The arable and peopled tracts constitute three districts, each having a distinctive name, - Murthly, down the Tay, from Dunkeld Bridge to the southern boundary, - the Bishopric up the Tay, from Dunkeld Bridge to the northern boundary, - and Strathbean, from the junction of the two preceding, and transversely to them, up both sides of the Bran, to the western boundary. The southern and eastern parts of Murthly present an undulating surface. The soil is a kind of black loam mixed with sand, and tolerably fertile. There is a considerable tract of heath, a portion of which is now covered with fine woods. The northern part of the district below Inver is a deep, narrow vale along the Tay. It is adorned with oak-woods; and the bottom forms a stripe of good arable land. *** In Murthly there is an inexhaustible body of freestone of a fine grain and great hardness. It is of a light, vivid ash colour, and was used for building the cathedral of Dunkeld."

This name is applied to a neat and commodious dwellinghouse, two storeys, slated, and in good repair - suitable offices attached. Property and residence of Sir William D. Stewart, Bart. [Baronet], Murthly Castle.
"It may be mentioned, that, "towards the beginning of last century, John Stewart Esq. of Grandtully, mortified the sum of 20,000 merks Scots, for the support of twelve poor men on his estate, of the Scotch Episcopal communion, appointing his own heirs, and the heirs of three other families allied to his own, administrators of this fund. About 1740, a building was erected for the objects of the benefaction in the district of Murthly; but for certain reasons, the original plan was not carried out. In the former Statistical Account of the parish it is said that the sum had accumulated to £2600 Sterling, - the interest of which is distributed among certain poor persons in this and other parishes, without regard to their religious creed" New Statistical Acct. [Account]
The building erected for the benevolent purposes mentioned in the foregoing extract is the same as above described, but is now used as a residence by the proprietor Sir W.D. Stewart. |

This name is applied to a large artificial mound on the top of Duncan's Hill. Tradition says it was formed by King Duncan, who used it as a camp. On one side it is orotected by an almost perpendicular cliff, on the other are the remains of intrenchments.
"Near the bottom of the south-east side of Birnam, also, there is a round mound which bears some traces of a good fortification. It has been known for time immemorial by the names of Court hill and Duncan's hill; and tradition reports that it was occasionally occupied by the unfortunate King Duncan." Fullarton's Gazetteer
"This hill, rendered classic ground by the pen of the immortal Shakespeare, rises to an elevation of 1580 feet above the level of the sea. It is about 12 miles distant from Dunsinane. Tradition states, that when Malcolm Canmohr came into Scotland to recover his dominions from Macbeth, he found the passes in the neighbourhood of Perth in the possession of the latter. Malcolm, therefore, marched his army from Stirling via Crieff and the Small Glen, to Drumour, within four miles of Dunkeld, and then across the hills, passing through what was sometimes called the Glen of Birnam. They rested the first night at Duncan's Camp, near to Rohallion, within sight of Dunsinane Hill, to which they marched the following morning." Dunkeld, its Straths & Glens |

This name is applied to a very large oak tree, adjacent to the Hospital. Tradition says that in former times the bodies of hanged criminals were buried under this tree, from which circumstance it takes its name.
"Ruthven, the sheriff, is said to have held his court on a rising ground to the north, still called the Court-hill; and there were lately, or there still may be, at the east end of Roch-an-roy wood, some oaks on which Highlanders were hung, and which long went under the name of the "Hanged-men's-trees". Some of these trees still remain in the parish of Little Dunkeld."

This name is applied to a narrow pass opening into Strath Tay from the south, through a ridge of high ground extending for some distance east from Birnam Hill, on the south side of Strath Tay. The ground on each side is somewhat steep.
A short distance to the south of this bridge is the Pass of Birnam, forming the gate to the Highlands in this quarter, and which, although rugged, is, notwithstanding, covered with overhanging trees. The height and abruptness of the hills on each side, the depth of shadow which is thrown on this narrow entrance, and the huge bare and broken faces of the rocks of Birnam which rise beyond, contrast well with the noble river as it wanders deep below through rich and overhanging trees, till, reaching the more open valley, it meanders among the ornamental grounds of Murthly. A public ferry on the River Tay near to the village of Caputh, connecting the traffic on the toll road, which leads from Dunkeld, on the north side of the river to this ferry, afterwards diverting from the South side through Stanley to Perth. The rates payable are imposed by the Commissioners of Supply, and are similar to those levied at a toll bar. Property of Sir Alexander Muir McKenzie Bart [Baronet] Delvine.
"Again at Caputh Ferry, opposite the church, in the centre between these extremes, in place of the common chain-boat which formerly plied there, in 1834 a boat was erected, under the superintendence of the late Sir Alexander Muir MacKenzie of Delvine, consisting of a large platform placed upon two long narrow pointed boats lying parallel to each other and at several feet distant, which, by a simple machinery, are made to present their sides to the action of the stream, and are thus propelled to either side of the river, and the greater the strength of the current, the more rapid the conveyance across. A chain is also stretched across the river, and which, passing over a fly-wheel fixed to the side of the platform, keeps the boat in a straight course. It is capable of taking in four loaded carts at one time, without unyoking the horses, and the passage is performed in five minutes" New Statistical Account |

[continued from page 57]
"Draining, planting, and the improved methods of cultivation have deprived the Stare Dam, where this parish joins that of Little Dunkeld on the road from Perth to Dunkeld, of its indescribable eeriness complained of by Morrison, as quoted by Sir Walter Scott in his "Fair Maid of Perth". The dam is now removed to a situation invisible from the road; and when the young wood has had a few years more growth, this place will form no contrast to what the same author justly calls at a furlong's distance from it, "one of the loveliest and richest scenes of Scotland - the north-west opening of Strathmore." A small rock nearly level with the ordinary ground surface, underneath which it is traditionally held that a large sum of money is buried. In order to test the truth of this tradition, it is said that some years ago a man commenced to excavate the soil around the rock in order, if possible, to secure the hidden treasure, while so employed, a small dog suddenly appeared on the top of the rock and desired the man to desist, assuring him at the same time that the reputed treasure was really there, but it was never intended that the eye of mortal should behold it. There are some marks on the rock which the superstitious tell you are the prints of this very sagacious dog's paws. |
