PASS OF BIRNAM | Pass of Birnam Pass of Birnam Pass of Birnam Pass of Birnam |
Sir W.D. Stewart Mr. John Harris Revd. [Reverend] Daniel McBride Dunkeld its Straths & Glens |
062 | This name is applied to a narrow pass opening into Strath Tay from the south, through a ridge of high ground extending for some distance east from Birnam Hill, on the south side of Strath Tay. The ground on each side is somewhat steep. A short distance to the south of this bridge is the Pass of Birnam, forming the gate to the Highlands in this quarter, and which, although rugged, is, notwithstanding, covered with overhanging trees. The height and abruptness of the hills on each side, the depth of shadow which is thrown on this narrow entrance, and the huge bare and broken faces of the rocks of Birnam which rise beyond, contrast well with the noble river as it wanders deep below through rich and overhanging trees, till, reaching the more open valley, it meanders among the ornamental grounds of Murthly.
