Revd. [Reverend] Daniel McBride Mr. Colin Livingstone Mr. Thomas Ellis Valuation Roll 1857-8 Dunkeld, its Straths & Glens |
062 | A large hotel and posting house in the village of Birnam, the buildings are from two to four stories in height, property of Sir W.D. Stewart, Bart. [Baronet] Murthly Castle. "Immediately beyond this is the Birnam Hotel, with its imposing and ecclesiastical appearance, raising its lofty spire, in grounds beautifully and tastefully laid out, having more the semblance of a gentleman's residence than that of a place of Public Entertainment. In the part of the building recently erected there is a splendid Hall, finished in the most gorgeous style, and considered to be the finest public room in Scotland. The hall is decorated with a number of fine paintings, two of which are said to be by Salvator Rosa. The new part of the building is in the Saxon Gothic style of architecture, from designs by the late Mr. Gillespie Graham." Dunkeld, its Straths & Glens |
