Supposed ROMAN CAMP [nr Lecropt Manse] (Supposed) Roman Camp Mr James Young Factor, Keir Mains by Bridge of Allan
Revd [Reverend] P. W. Young. Lecropt Manse by Bg. [Bridge] of Allan
Mr J Buchanan, Keir Mains.
132 This camp, which is situated about ¼ of a mile north of Lecropt Manse, is an oval shaped eminence of about 30 feet in height, with traces of of a trench and embanKment around its summit, also a slight elevation in the centre, upon which in all probability stood the Praetorium. The general opinion is that it is one of the chain of camps or signal points used for communicating between Stirling Castle and Ardoch. But Rev. [Reverend] P. W. Young, gives another account of this place, although he admits that it certainly may have been a camp previously. He states, that the Lairds of Keir had feudal power in this district and were able to pit and jibbet all those whom they thought proper, & that this eminence was used for judicial purposes. Both these accounts may be correct, the place at first sight has the appearance of a large tumulus, but upon closer inspection the traces of a camp may be seen.
